The Mummy (Original title: The Mummy ) is an American adventure film by director Alex Kurtzman from 2017 . It is a reboot of the film series around the 1932 film The Mummy and the first remake as part of the planned Dark Universe .

action

About 3200 years ago, at the time of the New Kingdom , the ancient Egyptian princess Ahmanet is said to ascend the throne and inherit from her father, Pharaoh Meneheptre. However, when the Pharaoh's first concubine gives birth to a son, Ahmanet loses her inheritance claim, because according to ancient Egyptian tradition the eldest crown prince always inherits the throne (and Meneheptre had no son to date). The princess feels betrayed and, furiously, makes a dark pact with the Egyptian god Seth . Then Seth hands her a cursed sacrificial dagger, with which Ahmanet first kills her father, his wife and their newborn son. Ahmanet is then supposed to stab her lover and thus sacrifice him to the deity: Seth needs a human body as a host in order to be able to develop and use his powers in the human world. Together, he and Ahmanet would have ruled Egypt as a royal couple. But when she wants to kill her lover, the Pharaoh's high priests storm into Ahmanet's bedchamber at the last moment, snatch the dagger from her and kill her lover with their own weapons. As punishment for the murders and attempt to let go of Seth to the earthly world, Ahmanet is alive mummified and deep under the sand, far from their homeland, buried. Her sarcophagus, covered with spells, is sunk in a tub full of mercury , and insidious traps are set in the grave.

3200 years later, in what is now Iraq , the grave is exposed by an air strike. Nick Morton, his companion Chris Vail and the archaeologist Jenny Halsey descend and recover the sarcophagus found in it, initially ignorant of what it contains. But Jenny gets nervous when she realizes that the tomb seems to be much more of a prison, especially the mercury and the traps alert her. Chris is bitten by a strange roller spider, and Ahmanet's vengeful ghost drives into Chris. This initially goes unnoticed by everyone. The adventurers and the sarcophagus are finally flown to England by plane. During the flight, Chris stabs Commander Greenway to death and then threatens to murder the other occupants as well. Nick is forced to shoot his own friend. As a result, the cockpit windows burst and a gigantic flock of crows invade the aircraft. The plane crashes and everyone except Jenny, who was provided with the only parachute by Nick in time and can jump, die in the impact.

In the Oxford Municipal Morgue , Nick wakes up naked and without a single scratch. There the ghost of Chris appears to him. Chris reveals to Nick that the latter only survived because Ahmanet wanted it this way: Nick is to be sacrificed to Seth, he was chosen when he broke open the sarcophagus. Nick then has visions of Ahmanet and, like Jenny, is lured to the crash site by them. Arrived at the crash site, both are surprised by the princess and her subordinates, but interrupted at the last second by privately hired mercenaries . After a short chase, Ahmanet and Nick are taken into custody by the special command. In a kind of museum, Nick meets Dr. Henry Jekyll and shortly afterwards his alter ego , Mr. Eddy Hyde. The doctor actually plans to complete the ritual of the princess, but wants to make Seth his own ally. The princess, meanwhile, manages to free herself and a game of cat and mouse begins across London. It ends in a subway tunnel, where Jenny is murdered by Ahmanet and Nick becomes the vessel for Seth. But the good side in Nick wins, he overpowers Ahmanet and literally sucks her life out. Then he uses Seth's powers, brings Jenny back from the dead and says goodbye to her before he disappears.

The ending shows Nick and his revived friend in the Egyptian desert in front of the pyramids of Giza , in search of ancient relics.

reception

Reviews

The film received mostly negative reviews. The film review portal Rotten Tomatoes gives the film 16% positive reviews and it has a Metascore of 34 out of 100 on Metacritic .

Manfred Riepe from epd Film says that formally the remake works like a well-oiled machine: "Every ten minutes the viewer is shaken by material battles and car chases, weightless in a crashing plane or under water, where crusader zombies try to kill the hero." there is no genre pattern that has not been burned up, says Riepe.

The film service judges: “New edition of the classic horror film series, in which 85 years after Boris Karloff a woman appears as a monster for the first time. The contourless protagonists lose themselves in countless effects, without the good-bad rifts growing into an almost exciting inner struggle. "
