Daniel Frederick "Dan" Ireland (born May 11, 1949 in Portland , Oregon , † April 14, 2016 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American - Canadian film producer and director .

Life

Ireland was born in Portland in 1949, the second of four children to Rainsford and Betty Ireland (née Shantz ). His date of birth was later misrepresented in numerous press articles.

When Dan Ireland was five, the mother settled in her home in Vancouver , Canada , where she raised the children alone. A visit to the screening of the sci-fi horror film Them! sparked his interest in cinema. From 1965 he worked in a cinema in Vancouver as an usher. He finished high school two years later.

In 1975 he moved to Seattle with his best friend Darryl MacDonald . Both had saved about $ 5,000 each and rented the old Moore Theater that they were extensively restoring. They opened the cinema in December 1975 under the name Moore Egyptian with a showing of Busby Berkeley's film The Gang's All Here .

In May 1976 Ireland and MacDonald hosted the first Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF), showing 28 films in 14 days. Among other things, Ireland brought several of Paul Verhoeven's films to Seattle and thereby made them known to the US audience. In 1982 he was awarded the Golden Calf in the Culture Prize category for his services to Dutch film . Ireland ran the SIFF until 1986.

He then moved to Los Angeles and worked there for three years at the film production company Vestron Pictures , where he was responsible for film acquisition. Among other things, he worked on John Huston's last film The Dead (1987). He was involved in several projects directed by Ken Russell . Ireland then moved to Cineville, where he served as Senior Vice President of Production. He later produced other films and has directed his first projects since 1996. Among other things, he promoted the career of Jessica Chastain , for whom he made her first leading role in a movie possible in 2008 when he cast her in his film Jolene for the role of the main character giving the title.

He died on April 14, 2016 at his Los Angeles home.
