Shrill nights in New York (The Velocity of Gary) is an American comedy film from the year 1998 . Directed by Dan Ireland and written by James Still .
action
Gary comes to New York City , where upon arrival he saves the drag queen Kid Joey, who is attacked by a group of homophobic people. The newcomer later meets the male porn star Valentino. Friendship turns into a homosexual relationship. Valentino also has a relationship with waitress Mary Carmen.
Valentino falls ill with AIDS and is admitted to a hospital, where he is visited by Gary and Mary Carmen.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of July 30, 1999 that the film proves once again that unusual people who represent traditional values are less interesting than ordinary people who represent unconventional values. When watching the film, one does not have the feeling that one is seeing real people in a real world (“there is never quite the feeling that these people occupy a real world”); Their colorful behavior looks like costumes under which actors hide themselves who would only obey instructions.
Stephen Holden wrote in the New York Times on July 16, 1999 that the plot was set in "erotically overheated Neverland". The dialogues are "hopelessly awkward" and appear "scenic".
