Theodore Ushev

Theodore Ushev ( Bulgarian Теодор Ушев , Teodor Uschew; * 4. February 1968 in Kyustendil ) is a Bulgarian animator who in Canada lives and works.

Life

Ushev studied animation at the Plovdiv Art Academy and graphic design at the National Art Academy in Sofia . After completing his studies in 1995, he worked as a poster artist in Bulgaria. He went to Canada in 1999 and settled in Montreal . Here he began working as an animator and eventually joined the National Film Board of Canada . His first film made at the NFB was Vertical in 2003 .

A great success for Ushev was the 2010 short animated film The Lipsett Diaries about the animator Arthur Lipsett , who committed suicide in 1986 at the age of 49. Ushev received international awards for the film, including a Genie Award for Best Animated Short Film and a nomination for the Cristal d'Annecy . As early as 2006 Ushev started a film trilogy with Tower Bawher , which is about the rise and fall of technology as well as power and war, and was completed in 2008 with Drux Flux and in 2013 with Gloria Victoria . Gloria Victoria received an Annie Award nomination in 2014 .

Ushev teaches animation, including in workshops as well as at universities and festivals. In 2012 he was a member of the jury of the Festival du Court-Métrage de Clermont-Ferrand .
