action

The young, one-eyed Kubo led a quiet and humble life in early Japan, took care of his sick mother Sariatu and worked as a storyteller. With a shamisen (a three-stringed lute) he can bring origami figures to life and thus make his stories about his father, the samurai Hanzo, even more alive. He has many enthusiastic listeners, including villagers Hosato, Hashi, and Kameyo. However, when it gets dark, Kubo always has to return home to watch out for his grandfather, the Evil Moon King, and his mother's two sisters, who stole one of his eyes when he was a baby.

One day, on the Obon holiday , Kubo tries to get in touch with his deceased father and draws the attention of the Moon King and his assistants, who want to steal his second eye. From now on he is being hunted and his only hope is to find magical armor that can help him fight. His mother accompanies him in the form of the snow monkey, and they also have the support of a little origami warrior. In search of armor, they meet Beetle, the beetle man, who claims to have been in Hanzo's retinue in the past. Now he has a curse on him and he suffers from amnesia . Beetle joins the companions. Together they first find the sword "Unbreakable" in a cave, but Kubo's aunts split up to prevent them from finding the remaining two pieces of armor. On the ocean floor, Kubo discovers the breastplate he is looking for "Impenetrable", but magical eyes put him in a trance . Beetle saves him while Monkey fends off an attack by one of the aunts.

In a dream, Kubo recognizes the place where he can find the last piece of armor: Hanzo's old fortress. However, this turns out to be a trap and the companions are attacked by the second aunt. This reveals that Beetle is actually Hanzo, Kubo's father, and immediately kills him. Kubo uses the magic of his shamisen and overpowers his aunt. Then he flies back to his home village and finds the missing helmet "Invulnerable" there. In the now complete magical armor he challenges and defeats the Moon King.

On a new Obon holiday, he contacts his deceased parents, whose ghosts actually appear next to him.

The original title Kubo and the Two Strings refers to a hair of his mother and a bowstring of his father; two powerful artifacts of memory that Kubo receives as the film progresses.

reception

Age rating

In Germany, the film is FSK 6. The reason for the release states: “The film combines Japanese myths with modern fantasy and numerous action scenes, it features a strong young protagonist who is suitable for children and young people to identify with. Individual threatening and martial elements can overwhelm younger children. "

In its country of origin, the United States , the film received PG approval, which stands for Parental Guidance Suggested and means that an adult companion is recommended. The reasons given were "thematic elements, uncanny images, action and danger".

Reviews

The film was able to convince 97 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes and was thus one of the best rated films of 2016. The consensus there says: “'Kubo - The Brave Samurai' makes his incredible animation a captivating - and courageous one melancholy story that has something to offer an audience of all ages. "

The director Travis Knight

Lukas Stern from Spiegel Online speaks of an enchantingly filigree and child-friendly martial arts film that quietly introduces the delicate and for children unquestionably particularly difficult question of death.

Johannes Hahn from Robots & Dragons thinks that the film tells its story a bit bumpy at times. The underlying tone is actually serious, which is why the film tries to loosen up its basic mood a little with jokes that are interspersed over and over again, but this does not always succeed, according to Hahn, because sometimes the humor seems too artificial and forced to really ignite.

From the German Film and Media Review was Kubo - The brave samurai with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reasoning states: “In beautiful and extremely poetic stop-motion pictures that take the viewer into a strange world full of myths and mysteries, the film tells not only about a boy’s identity , but also about childlike fantasy and magic who exercise stories on listeners and viewers of all ages. This is sometimes very gloomy for children and, due to the strangeness of the world of the Japanese samurai, also quite strange, but at the same time arouses interest in other cultures and their stories and narratives. "

Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter saw the film as a possible Oscar nominee for Best Animated Film . In December 2016, it was announced that the film had been shortlisted for the Best Visual Effects category at the 2017 Academy Awards .

Gross profit

The film has worldwide revenues of approximately $ 70 million.
