Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa ( Japanese 田 川 洋行 , Tagawa Hiroyuki ; born September 27, 1950 in Tokyo Prefecture , Japan ) is a Russian -American film actor and film producer of Japanese descent.

Life

Although born in Japan, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa grew up in various US cities. Because of his father, a member of the US Army , the family often had to move. So lived Tagawa in Fort Bragg ( North Carolina ), Fort Polk ( California ) and Fort Hood ( Texas ). Most recently, the family lived in southern California, where Tagawa was a student at the University of Southern California and went to Japan as an exchange student.

From 1986 Tagawa, who could be seen in the school theater as a teenager, stood in front of the camera for numerous films and television series. He often embodied Asian villains. Tagawa became famous in 1995 for his role as Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat (1995). In 1999 he played the cruel General Ruechang in the film Fight of the Dragon , in which the Swedish action star Dolph Lundgren also played. But he is also widely known for his role as Fleet Admiral Genda in the 2001 epic Pearl Harbor .

In 2007, Tagawa made his debut as a film producer with the action film Duel of Legends . In 2012 he can be seen again in the role of Shang Tsung in the web series "Mortal Kombat Legacy".

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

In his private life, however, he is the opposite of his brutal and inhuman characters. He is committed to charitable causes and looks after young people in need.

He is married and has a daughter and a son with his wife Sally.

In 2016, Tagawa also took citizenship of Russia.
