An alternate world story is told in which the Axis powers won World War II in 1947 and then divided the United States among themselves. The German Reich has occupied the east coast and large parts of the south ( Greater Nazi Reich ), the Japanese the west coast ( Japanese Pacific States ), while a neutral territory exists between these occupation zones. In the occupied parts the occupiers rule with a hard hand, with the Nazis in the east continuing their racist policy and relying specifically on American collaborators , some of whom hold high positions. According to a map of the world that can be seen in Season 2, the German Empire dominates most of North America as well as parts of Central and South America (on the coast of Brazil and Argentina ), all of Europe and Africa, and the Near and Middle East . Japan controls East Asia , India , Australia , East Siberia, and the west coasts of North and South America. Large parts of Central Asia , Siberia and parts of Central and South America, as well as a buffer zone between the Japanese and German areas in North America, are not subject to any direct control of the two superpowers.

The actual plot begins in 1962. Adolf Hitler is still alive, but his death is expected soon, so that internal power struggles for the succession are ongoing among the Nazis. Parts of the German leadership also want to end the Cold War with the Japanese and eliminate the Empire with a military strike. Meanwhile, in the areas controlled by the Germans, a resistance group is operating, in whose circles films are circulating that are supposed to come from a man with the code name The Man in the High Castle and seem to show a completely different reality, in which Japan and Germany from the Allies were defeated. In this world the story of the protagonists develops between politics, espionage, persecution, resistance, love and the two opposing surveillance states Japan and the German Empire. The function of the ominous film roles is only cleared up at the beginning of the second season. At the beginning of the third season, their origin from a parallel world , so-called multiverses , is discussed. People who, for some unexplained reason, can move between these worlds, called travelers , brought the films with them. The Nazis are working on a machine to get there permanently so that they can also conquer these territories. The Japanese are also in possession of some films, the recordings of which include the detonation of a hydrogen bomb . They want the Germans to believe that they already have this technology in order to conceal their technical backwardness and thus deter the Nazis from a possible attack.

season 1

In 1962, in the alternative world, Juliana Crain comes into contact with the resistance in Japanese-occupied San Francisco when her half-sister Trudy is killed by Kempeitai inspector Kido. Before Trudy's death, Juliana received a film role from her with a newsreel called The Grasshopper Lies Heavy . The film takes place in an alternate history in which the Allies won the war and defeated Germany and Japan. It is part of a film series that is collected and distributed by a mysterious person known as the "Man in the High Castle", much to the annoyance of the Führer, Adolf Hitler. Juliana believes the newsreel reflects some kind of alternate reality and is part of a greater truth about the world as it should be. Her friend Frank Frink - who keeps his Jewish ancestry a secret out of fear of the Nazis - thinks the newsreel is just a hoax. Juliana learns that Trudy wanted to take the film to a contact in Cañon City, Colorado , in the Neutral Zone, and drives there on her behalf to find out why.

In Cañon City, Juliana meets resistance member Joe Blake, who was actually expecting Trudy. Joe is, however, a double agent who works for the Nazis under SS-Obergruppenführer John Smith. Smith survives an assassination attempt, likely by the Resistance, and begins investigating who gave the Resistance the information about his whereabouts. Frank is captured when the Japanese and Nazis become suspicious of Juliana's activities. Without Frank having the information he is looking for, he cannot give you what you are looking for. In retaliation, they kill Frank's sister and her two children and allegedly justify this with their Jewish descent. The murders lead Frank to plan to kill the visiting Japanese heir to the throne , but doubts arise as he stands in front of the podium in the crowd. Fall as surplus, which is Crown Prince by a sniper shot the Nazis instead of Frank.

The Japanese Minister of Commerce Nobusuke Tagomi, who works in San Francisco, meets in secret with the high-ranking Nazi Rudolph Wegener, who is incognito as a Swedish businessman. Both are concerned about the power vacuum that will likely arise after Hitler either dies or is forced to resign because of his increasing Parkinson's disease . Wegener explains that Hitler's successor could use the German Reich's atomic bombs on Japan and take control of the rest of the former United States. Currently, however, Japan and the Nazi Empire are in a cold war that is full of tensions but without open armed confrontations, with the Japanese lagging behind the Germans technologically. Smith is visited in New York by the high-ranking SS officer Reinhard Heydrich and is suspicious of his ambitions to replace Hitler. Heydrich invites Smith on a joint hunt, in which he is given the choice of either supporting the conspiracy or being killed. Heydrich receives a call from which he actually expected the news of Hitler's murder, but in fact Hitler informs him personally that his conspiracy has failed. Smith then locks Heydrich as a traitor.

season 2

Chased by the Japanese, whom they hold responsible for at least one murder, Juliana seeks asylum at the Nazi embassy in San Francisco. Smith realizes that Juliana's request has no prospect of success and is personally committed to her. He takes her to New York under his protection and without Joe's knowledge.

The doctor Dr. Adler informs John Smith that his son Thomas has muscular dystrophy . This is a disease that must be reported in the German Reich so that Thomas can be euthanized as a burden to society. Smith then kills Adler to keep Thomas' health a secret and presents the death as being caused by a heart attack .

Joe discovers that he was born as part of the Lebensborn program and that he is the only biological son of the high-ranking Berlin Nazi Martin Heusmann. Finally, Joe reconciles with Heusmann. He becomes interim Chancellor , while Hitler is dying due to illness and, after he has died, until the National Socialist Party has elected Hitler's successor. Heusmann announces on television that Hitler was murdered by Japanese agents and promises to convict the perpetrators by all means including war. Smith is the only high-ranking Nazi who has doubts about Heusmann's sudden announcement. He appears to initiate Heydrich's release based on the assumption that Heydrich would become the new leader, but instead, Heydrich reveals that Heusmann is behind the conspiracy. Heusmann intends to launch a nuclear attack by the Nazis against the Japanese empire. The attack would cost the lives of millions of Japanese and their rulers and weaken the Japanese empire so severely that the surviving Japanese would have no choice but to subordinate themselves to a global German empire, which would strengthen Heusmann's position.

Smith carefully tries to interrupt and smash the Heusmann conspiracy and informs the Nazi Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler about the conspiracy in Berlin . Smith gives Himmler so many clues about the conspiracy that they cannot be dismissed as hearsay , whereupon Himmler has Heusmann imprisoned for high treason and the murder of the Führer; Joe is also arrested.

Himmler prevents Heusmann's planned speech declaring war on Japan in front of thousands of Nazis in the Great Hall and instead informs the Reich that Smith has uncovered Heusmann's conspiracy. Smith is glorified as a Nazi hero, and Himmler's rise to leader implies a new era of peace and relaxation between the Japanese Empire and the Nazi Empire.

Meanwhile, Thomas Smith found out about his illness. Influenced by his father's devotion to the kingdom, he surrenders himself for euthanasia . Frank decides to abandon his pacifism and become a member of the American resistance against the Japanese empire within the Pacific states. He eventually participates in a terrorist bombing of the central command building of the government of the Pacific states in downtown San Francisco. The attack kills many members of the Japanese military and other high-ranking leaders, but contrary to the terrorists' expectations, it does not kill Kido. Juliana escapes from New York. Arriving in the neutral zone, she sees Trudy, who is obviously still alive.

season 3

After months in prison, Joe is forced to execute his father, Martin Heusmann, and becomes part of Himmler's secret service. Juliana discovers that Trudy comes from an alternate reality in which Juliana died and later meets black market trader Wyatt Price. Meanwhile, the disfigured Frank lives in a secret community of Jews, where he draws anti-fascist pictures that are spread in the Japanese-occupied territories. Tagomi and Admiral Inokuchi realize that the German Reich has imposed a secret oil embargo on the Japanese empire. Reichsmarschall Rockwell, together with J. Edgar Hoover, intrigues against Smith, who has meanwhile been appointed Oberstgruppenführer. Nicole Dörmer makes a propaganda film that glorifies the life of Thomas Smith and begins working with the Nazi functionary on a new propaganda project called Year Zero, which aims to erase the history of the former United States. This includes the destruction of the Lincoln Memorial , the Liberty Bell, and the Statue of Liberty . Dörmer begins a secret love affair with the New York journalist Thelma Harris, who is later arrested as part of a raid on a lesbian restaurant ordered by Himmler. Himmler sends Joe to San Francisco on an alleged diplomatic mission, in fact he is supposed to kill a number of Nazi defectors and Japanese officials including Tagomi there. Before Joe succeeds in killing Tagomi, Juliana stops Joe by killing him. In New York, Helen Smith is devastated by the death of her son Thomas. In affect, she kills Thomas' doctor's widow, who was obsessed with the idea that her husband had been murdered. Despite fears that her secret will become public, John Smith lets Helen begin therapy with a psychiatrist to deal with the trauma of Thomas's death.

Meanwhile, Childan and Ed arrive in Denver, the cultural capital of the Neutral Zone, on a bus full of Americana merchandise that Childan hopes to sell in his store. The bus and almost all of its relics are stolen by muggers, and when Childan prepares to return to California, Ed is reluctant to follow him, having started a relationship with a man named Jack. Childan returns to San Francisco alone and finds his shop occupied by a Japanese family. Kido promises to return the shop to him if he reveals where Ed is in return so that Kido can find Frank. Kido pursues Frank and ritually beheads him in the former internment camp Manzanar .

Smith blackmailed Hoover and got Rockwell to be a liar in front of Himmler. Himmler therefore dismisses Rockwell and replaces him as Reichsmarschall with Smith. Smith is introduced to a research program by Nazi researcher Josef Mengele that begins with investigations into a woman who has died and returned from a secondary world. The aim of the investigations and experiments is to send people and Wehrmacht troops to secondary worlds with a machine. The machine is located in the Lackawanna tunnel, where an anomaly enables such journeys according to the string theory. Juliana begins to explore the memories of her other self from the next world, which was killed in the tunnel by Joe. She organizes an expedition with some resistance workers to destroy the machine. Smith and Himmler attend a test of the machine in which one test person appears to have made the trip and three other people die. Juliana has forwarded the secret documents, which come from the German Reich, to Tagomi, who uses them to put pressure on Smith to end the oil embargo. Smith's daughter is now old enough to undergo the mandatory medical examination that revealed Thomas's illness. Fearful of the possible results and hoping for a postponement, Helen and her daughters flee towards a beach house. Himmler officially declares the beginning of the year zero, with the Air Force bombing the Statue of Liberty. Himmler sends Nicole Dörmer to a re-education facility in Germany. A sniper hired by Wyatt shoots Himmler and seriously injures him. Juliana and the man in the High Castle are captured by the Nazis. Smith learns from Abendsen that people can only travel to an alternate world if their alter ego has already died there. Smith tries to keep Juliana from escaping into a secondary world, without being able to do so, she disappears before his eyes.

Season 4

The action begins a year after the end of the third season. Juliana lives in the parallel world where the United States is not ruled by Nazis. Since the Nazis in the main world have meanwhile improved the technology of switching between the worlds, Juliana's whereabouts are not hidden from them for long. She barely escapes being killed by a murderer sent by Reichsmarschall Smith and then switches back to the main world.

A Japanese military faction led by General Yamori is responsible for the assassination attempt on Tagomi. The group wanted to gain power over the North American Pacific states independently of the government in Japan. In order to distract herself from the guilty party, she has attached the attack on a member of the Black Communists Rebellion (BCR), a group of black resistance fighters in the Japanese-occupied areas of North America. Takeshi Kido uncovers the plot and arranges for Yamori's arrest. Supported by white rebels around Wyatt Price, the BCR organized an assassination attempt on high-ranking Japanese in order to get revenge on them for their cruelty towards the blacks. Robert Childan then establishes contact with the Japanese Crown Princess for the BCR, who supports political efforts to get the Japanese to give up the occupation of the North American Pacific states. At a secret meeting then arranged between an admiral sent by the princess and the BCR leader, however, the latter is shot at the instigation of Takeshi Kido. The BCR, now led more and more by Mrs Bell Mallory, then carried out a series of explosive attacks on the Japanese fuel supply infrastructure. This weakened the Japanese occupiers so much that, at the behest of the emperor, they withdrew from the Pacific states.

The marriage of John and Helen Smith suffers greatly from the fact that Helen - like one of her daughters - increasingly questions Nazi ideology and therefore lived with her brother in the Neutral Zone for almost a year. The Smith couple's loyalty to the National Socialist line is also questioned by the Himmlers. Helen's behavior does not remain hidden from the resistance fighters either, so that Juliana and Wyatt try to win them over as informants for the resistance. In order to prevent his recall as the North American Reichsmarschall, John Smith, in collaboration with Wilhelm Görtzmann, Heinrich Himmler's adjutant, put into action a plan in Berlin in which Himmler and a large part of the Nazi leadership were murdered. Afterwards, John and Görtzmann divide the rule of the empire among themselves, the former retains power over North America, the latter becomes the new leader. The implementation of the plan co-devised by John to recapture the North American Pacific states after the withdrawal of the Japanese and to imprison and gas the non-Aryan population there in concentration camps begins. With Helen's help, the rebels carry out an assassination attempt on John Smith, in which Helen dies and as a result he commits suicide, cornered by Juliana. While the Nazi leadership is canceling the reconquest of the Pacific states because of John's death, the resistance fighters against the Nazis gain control of the portal in Pennsylvania, which is used to switch between the worlds.

production

History of origin

About a TV adaptation of Philip K. Dick's Das Orakel vom Berge , English original title: The Man in the High Castle , there had been negotiations with various producers and broadcasters for several years. The project from producer and director was Driven Ridley Scott , who with the movie Blade Runner (already another novel by Dick ? Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep : English title Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Was filmed).

In 2010 it was announced that the BBC would co- produce a four-part adaptation written by Howard Benton with production companies Headline Pictures , FremantleMedia Enterprises and Scott Free Productions .

The trade journal Variety reported on February 11, 2013 that the broadcaster SyFy was planning a four-part mini-series, together with Ridley Scott and Frank Spotnitz as executive producers, now with the participation of the production companies Scott Free Productions, Headline Pictures and Electric Shepherd Productions .

On October 1, 2014 , the filming of the serial pilot for the pilot season of Amazon began in Roslyn, Washington in January 2015. The adaptation for this film came from Frank Spotnitz. Producers were Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker and Jordan Sheehan (Scott Free), Stewart Mackinnon and Christian Baute (headline) and Isa Hackett and Kalen Egan (Electric Shepherd). The pilot was first broadcast as part of the Pilot Season on January 15, 2015. Amazon Studios way of making decisions about the production of TV series involves viewers by filming a number of pilots and publishing them in parallel. The data that is then obtained through the use of the spectators by the pilots helps to decide which series will be produced. On February 18, 2015, Amazon gave The Man in the High Castle the green light. In December 2015 it was announced that the series would be extended for a second season.

In early January 2017, the series was extended for a third season. At the same time it was announced that Frank Spotnitz is leaving the series due to creative differences and that Eric Overmyer Spotnitz will take over the role as producer and responsible person .

Filming

In April 2014, after the series got the green light on Amazon, a lot was filmed in Seattle , which is the alternate world version of San Francisco in the series . Filming locations in Seattle were the monorail , the Paramount Theater, a newspaper office in the Pike Place Market district, as well as in the districts of Capitol Hill, Chinatown-International District and Georgetown. Among other things, the Roslyn Café was filmed in Roslyn, which is also known from the TV series Alaska , of all places . Further scenes were recorded in New York.

Another location from April 2014 was Vancouver, British Columbia . The promenade at the Coast Capital Savings Building, the University of British Columbia and downtown around West Georgia Street were the central filming locations there.

The recordings for the Führer headquarters (1st season, 10th episode) took place at and in the Hohenwerfen Fortress in Werfen near Salzburg. The interior shots of the meeting between Hitler and Rudolph Wegener were filmed on the ground floor of the Maifeldtribüne of the bell tower .

marketing

Amazon caused a stir when it advertised the series with posters showing the Statue of Liberty with a Hitler salute and a red Nazi sash. Amazon's other advertisement on the New York subway - the benches and the ceiling were covered with the fictional flag of Nazi America on one side and that of Japanese America on the other - was ordered due to heavy criticism from the population of Governor Andrew Cuomo .

Soundtrack

The soundtrack for the series was produced by DJ Danger Mouse with the participation of well-known musicians such as Angel Olsen , Norah Jones , Michael Kiwanuka or Beck in the style of the 1960s, and released on April 7, 2017 under the title Resistance Radio .

Cast and dubbing

The German dubbed version for the first season was created by Mo Synchron GmbH in Munich , and for the second season by Münchner Film- & Fernseh-Synchron GmbH. Dialogue direction was directed by Peter Woratz , who also wrote the dialogue book for some episodes . The dialog book authors also included Carina Krause (season 1) and Cornelius Frommann (seasons 2 to 4).

From the rating aggregators Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic , who evaluate reviews from predominantly English-language media, it becomes clear that the second season was much less popular than the other seasons (as of January 19, 2020).

Positive reviews of the first season include the following:

“The real highlight of 'The Man in the High Castle' is the alienation and alienation effect that arises with the fictitious superimposition of the epochs. The disturbing effect of the design mash-up is lasting because the American 1960s, which are in cultural memory for the birth of pop culture and for Hollywood, are heavily contaminated by the pervasive Nazi symbolism. "

- Thomas Andre : Spiegel Online

“'The Man in the High Castle' cleverly creates complete uncertainty. Because you can't trust anyone in a world marked by violence, intimidation and fear. [...] In view of 'The Man in the High Castle' one can predict that more quality series can be expected from Amazon Studios in the coming years. "
