Angel Olsen (* 22. January 1987 ) is an American pop-rock - and independent - singer and songwriter.

Life

Olsen was adopted at the age of three and grew up in Richmond Heights, Missouri . She later attended Tower Grove Christian High School in St. Louis , Missouri . In her very early teenage years she wrote little songs and wanted to be a musician, actress or dancer. In her later teenage years, she developed from a singer-son writer - guitarist to the front woman of the local jam rock band Goodfight . She later took the chance to gain first major concert and recording studio experience as a background singer with Bonnie "Prince" Billy . She moved to Chicago in 2007 .

In July 2010 her solo debut Strange Cacti came out with six pieces in indie folk style on Bathetic Records.

In addition to her solo career, she and Will Oldham are also part of the six-member band Chivalrous Amoekons , who cover songs by The Mekons and released the album Fanatic Voyage in 2016 on the Drag City sub-label Sea Note . Compiled with independent recordings by the trio of the singer-songwriter Steve Gunn , the Pickathon Festival in Portland (Oregon) brought the album Live At Pickathon: Angel Olsen / Steve Gunn with four tracks on the indie label Easy Sound from Los Angeles at the end of November 2016 (Rock quartet line-up) and three of him in the psychedelic rock genre.

Their autumn 2019 tour of the United States together with Vagabon led through event venues that held an average of more than 2000 visitors.

Of the eleven songs on her 2019 album All Mirrors , eight compositions were written together with multi-instrumentalist Ben Babbitt , three entirely by her, and all of the lyrics were written by herself. Eight of the pieces contain elaborate string arrangements for which Jherek Bischoff , his own string orchestra conductor, was brought in to coordinate the six violins, three violas and two cellos. In addition to singing, she herself was instrumental in recording the music with guitar, synthesizer and piano. Stylistically, it is the indie pop subgenre Dream Pop .

Olsen last lived temporarily in Asheville , North Carolina .
