life and career

Xavier Dolan-Tadros is the son of teacher Geneviève Dolan and Egyptian-born singer and actor Manuel Tadros, who has guest appearances in some of Dolan's films (I Killed My Mother, Laurence Anyways, and Don't Say Who You Are!) . Dolan's first appearance as an actor was in a series of commercials for a pharmacy chain when he was four . A few years later he appeared in television series such as Miséricorde, Omertà II and L'Or . He also starred in short and feature films such as J'en suis! (1997), Le marchand de sable (1999), The Secret Fortress ( La Forteresse suspendue , 2001), Miroirs d'Été (2006), Martyrs (2008) and Good Neighbors (2010). In 2014 Dolan played a leading role in Daniel Grou's feature film Miraculum for the first time without directing it himself. He also appeared in 2014 under the direction of Charles Binamé for the film Elephant Song , an adaptation of the play of the same name by Nicolas Billon, alongside Bruce Greenwood , Catherine Keener and Carrie-Anne Moss .

Dolan also works as a voice actor; for example, he speaks Ron Weasley in the Québec-French version of the Harry Potter films and Jacob Black in the Twilight films. I Killed My Mother (2009) is his directorial debut as a feature film. The film premiered on May 18, 2009 at the Cannes Film Festival in the film series of young directors (Quinzaine des réalisateurs) ; it has been sold in over 20 countries. His second film, Heartbreaker , was shown on May 16, 2010 at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. His third film, Laurence Anyways , also premiered in this category on May 18, 2012 at the Cannes Film Festival .

In 2013 he shot the music video for the song College Boy by the French new wave band Indochine , which was criticized for its excessive display of violence in connection with the use of Christian symbols . Dolan's fourth film is an adaptation of Michel Marc Bouchard's play Tom à la ferme . It premiered on September 2, 2013 in competition at the 70th Venice International Film Festival and was awarded a FIPRESCI prize . In it he again plays one of the main roles. The German theatrical release under the title Say not who you are! took place on August 21, 2014. His fifth film, Mommy , was shot in autumn 2013 and premiered on May 22, 2014 in the competition for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival and was awarded the Jury Prize, which went in equal parts to the film Adieu au Langage by Jean -Luc Godard left. With Mommy, Dolan presented a directorial work in Cannes for the fourth time, but for the first time in the main competition.

As the sixth film with the title Simply the End of the World , which was starred , among others, by Vincent Cassel , Léa Seydoux , Marion Cotillard and Gaspard Ulliel , Dolan realized the play Juste La Fin Du Monde by Jean-Luc Lagarce . This smaller film should bridge the great genre differences between Mommy and his seventh film The Death and Life of John F. Donovan and prepare Dolan for the upcoming larger film project. Simply the End of the World earned him his second invitation to the competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 , where he was awarded the Grand Jury Prize.

The Death and Life of John F. Donovan , which he wrote with Jacob Tierney , would eventually become his first English-language film. The start of shooting was planned for autumn 2015. In an interview with the Montreal Gazette , Dolan mentioned that he also plans to adapt the Hitchcock film Cocktail for a corpse in a modern version; But before that he wanted to take a creative break and study art history , as he was exhausted due to his enormous productivity in the years before.

On June 29, 2016 it was announced that Dolan and 682 other personalities had been invited as a new member by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

Dolan is an openly homosexual and describes the film I Killed My Mother , which revolves around the homosexual Hubert and the relationship with his mother, as semi-autobiographical .
