action

Nathan Ellis (Edward Baker-Close) was a nine-year-old witness of a car accident in which his father was killed. This was the only one able to get through to the autistic boy. After the loss, Nathan's illness becomes more apparent and he no longer allows any physical closeness from his mother either. His special need for structure and regularity and his difficulties in expressing and interpreting emotions are increasingly overwhelming.

As a teenager, Nathan (now played by Asa Butterfield ) receives a new math teacher - Martin Humphreys ( Rafe Spall ). Humphreys suffers from multiple sclerosis and is lonely. He takes care of the boy and helps him to find his way around the world with his illness. At the same time, he was the first to recognize and promote Nathan's island talent in the field of mathematics , bring him to the English team for highly talented young mathematicians led by Richard ( Eddie Marsan ) and prepare him for the International Mathematical Olympiad . Arriving at the venue in Taipei ( Taiwan ), Nathan falls in love with his Chinese competitor Zhang Mei against all odds, which presents both of them with a completely new challenge: Until now, everything interpersonal had seemed irrational to Nathan's. Now he makes the experience that the irrationality of love cannot be expressed in formulas, while Zhang Mei learns to deal with Nathan's worldview and way of thinking.

X + Y is the feature film debut of the British documentary filmmaker Morgan Matthews. The idea for the production of the film came to the two-time BAFTA winner when he was shooting the documentary Beautiful Young Minds for the BBC , which accompanied a group of highly gifted British students during their stay in various training camps and the participation in a mathematics Olympiad. This documentation was nominated for the BAFTA 2007. Matthews was so impressed by his experience with mathematically gifted students that he used this material to shoot X + Y and use many lines of dialogue from the documentation.
