Martin Phipps

Martin Phipps (born August 1, 1968 ) is a British composer who has written the music for numerous cinema and television films.

life and work

Phipps is the son of Sue Pears and Jack Phipps, an art manager who previously founded an agency for numerous important musicians. Jack Phipps also worked for Benjamin Britten , Martin Phipps' godfather.

After studying at the University of Manchester , Phipps first had good reviews with Eureka Street , then with the BBC dramas North & South and Elizabeth - The Virgin Queen . For the latter film, he received the Ivor Novello Award for best film music.

Phipps wrote the music for Low Winter Sun by Channel 4 , also for Grow Your Own . He also composed for the BBC production of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility . Phipps was then commissioned to write the music for the BBC version of Oliver Twist . For this he received the Ivor Novello Award again in 2008 for the best television film music.

In 2005 Phipps wrote the score for Pierrepoint , also for The Wife of Bath , the BBC production of Canterbury Tales and the contemporary drama Dirty Filthy Love . He also wrote the music for The Flying Scotsman and The Line of Beauty .
