Liya Kebede (born March 1, 1978 in Addis Ababa , Ethiopia ) is an Ethiopian model , designer and actress .

life and career

Liya Kebede was discovered while she was attending the Lycée Guebre Mariam and referred to a French agent. After graduating from high school, she went to France and later to New York City . Her breakthrough came when Tom Ford signed her to the Gucci Fall / Winter 2000 fashion show . From then on, she regularly ran fashion shows in New York City, Paris and Milan . She was on the cover of leading fashion magazines, including various issues of Vogue . She photographed for advertising campaigns by GAP , Yves Saint Laurent , Victoria's Secret , Emanuel Ungaro , Louis Vuitton , Tommy Hilfiger , Revlon , Dolce & Gabbana , H&M and Escada . In 2003, she became the new face of Estée Lauder as the first dark-skinned model . She is said to have received three million US dollars for the contract . In 2013 she was shown in the Pirelli calendar .

Kebede had small roles in the films Lord of War - Dealer of Death (2005) and The Good Shepherd (2006). In the film Desert Flower (2009), in which she played the lead role, she played Waris Dirie .

Since 2005, Kebede has been the UN special envoy for the World Health Organization .

Kebede has been married to the hedge fund manager Kassy Kebede since 2000 , with whom she has two children (* 2001 and * 2005).
