Florian Cossen
Florian Micoud Cossen (born January 3, 1979 in Tel Aviv , Israel ) is a German film director and screenwriter. He became famous for his multi-award-winning feature film debut Das Lied in mir (2010).
Life
Florian Cossen grew up as the son of a German diplomat in Israel, Montreal and Barcelona . In 1994 he moved to Germany. There Cossen passed his Abitur in Bonn and completed his community service. He came into contact with film relatively late, during his community service, through his friend, Canadian and filmmaker Antonin Monmart. This was followed by internships in the areas of directing, script development and production from 1999/2000, which took him to Cologne and Costa Rica . After he had been rejected at the film academy in Berlin , Cossen began studying directing / scenic film at the Baden-Württemberg State Film Academy in Ludwigsburg in 2002 . There he initially worked as an assistant director .
During his studies, Cossen directed several short films, including Wolfsnacht (2005) and, together with Antonin Monmart, L'Oubli - Das Vergessen (2006), which was shot in Canada. With his directorial work he was accepted at the Hof International Film Festival and the World Film Festival in Montreal. Scholarships led Cossen to UCLA in Los Angeles and in 2006 to the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires . His six-month study visit to the Argentine capital coincided with the anniversary of the military dictatorship and the reporting of missing and forcibly adopted babies who are sought by the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo and returned to their families of origin. This inspired Cossen to research for his diploma film Das Lied in mir (2010). The story is about a 30-year-old German (played by Jessica Schwarz ) who, while listening to a Spanish lullaby in Buenos Aires, finds out by chance that she is the daughter of two opponents of the regime (" Desaparecidos ") who disappeared during the Argentine military dictatorship .
When creating Das Lied in mir Cossen avoided taking a documentary approach. “As a filmmaker, I'm a manipulator. I'm a storyteller and old documentary or photo material would have been out of place, ”said Cossen. His feature film debut, in other roles with Michael Gwisdek and Beatriz Spelzini , earned the German great praise from the critics as well as several international festival prizes. The historical-political dimensions of the story would rather take a backseat, but Das Lied in me is an "aesthetically and narrative concentrated drama" , according to the film-dienst , which also uses sophisticated picture compositions and an admirable focus on nuances played main character noticed. Cossen himself was rewarded for his graduation film at the film school with a nomination for the German Film Prize as best director.
To finance his studies, Cossen shot, among other things, image films for various German companies. He mentions Wim Wenders ' Paris, Texas, as one of his defining films .
