Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Asociación Civil Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo ( Civic Association of Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo ) is an Argentine non-governmental organization whose aim is to locate children who were given up for forced adoption during the military dictatorship of 1976-1983 and to bring them back to their families of origin. As a rule, these are their grandchildren, i.e. the descendants of the daughters of the women united in the organization who have "disappeared" by force . In addition, the grandmothers want to hold those responsible to account. The president is Enriqueta Estela Barnes de Carlotto . The Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo work closely with the Madres de Plaza de Mayo , but is an independent organization.

background

During the dictatorship, the babies were systematically stolen from prisoners against the regime, and the mothers were then tortured and killed (→ Desaparecidos ). The organization was founded on October 22, 1977 by 12 women. They demonstrated to clarify the whereabouts of their daughters and grandchildren, some of whom had been kidnapped and some of whom were born in custody.

The organization estimates that there are a total of around 500 children in Argentina who were kidnapped by the henchmen of the dictatorship and then secretly given up for adoption by the military . In at least 128 cases, children who had disappeared during the military dictatorship were returned to parents or rightful families by 2018. The efforts continue. The confrontation with their biological origins is usually a very painful process for the now grown-up children - also because their adoptive fathers, as officers at the time, were often involved in the torture and murder of their birth parents. Some of these now grown up children founded the organization HIJOS , which advocates tough prosecution of the perpetrators of the time.
