At her side (original title Away From Her) is a Canadian feature film from 2006 . The directorial debut of the Canadian actress Sarah Polley is based on the short story The Bear Came Over the Mountain by the Canadian writer Alice Munro .

action

The film takes place in a snowy Canadian landscape. The married couple Fiona and Grant Anderson have been living in the middle of nature in the former home of Fiona's grandparents for 20 years. Fiona falls ill with Alzheimer's . The first forgetfulnesses set in. When she doesn't come home after a ski trip and Grant finds her disoriented in town after a long search, it seems clear that only medical care can help her.

Fiona and Grant decide that she will move to a care home for people with dementia. For the first 30 days, Grant is not allowed to visit his wife, from whom he has never been separated for the past 45 years, to make it easier for her to get used to it. When the deadline was up, she made friends with Aubrey, who was also ill, and no longer seemed to recognize Grant as her husband. She is now an acquaintance who is so nice and so "persistent" to visit her every day. Grant becomes an observer of an unusual couple. When he visits Fiona one day in her room, he meets her in a situation that Fiona comforts Aubrey, whose wife wants to take him back out of financial difficulties. As a result, Fiona seems to suffer more and more from Aubrey's absence. She hardly ever leaves the room and may have to be transferred to a department for more serious cases due to her poor state of health. Grant tries to get Aubrey's wife Marian to give Aubrey back to the home. At first she refuses, but is very impressed by Grant and invites him to a ball, which Grant accepts. Slowly the two get closer. Eventually she allows Grant to bring Aubrey to the home for a visit. However, when Grant comes to the clinic with Aubrey, Fiona's health has improved for a short time. She recognizes him as her husband and claims that he has not been there for a long time. They hug deeply.

Reviews

  • Berliner Zeitung , February 14, 2007: “The film is a tender homage to Julie Christie, who has long been a kind of surrogate mother for the half-orphan Polley. Christie gives Alzheimer's disease - can you say that? - Grace, with slight irony, but without a hint of false kitsch. "
  • Der Tagesspiegel , February 15, 2007: “A love story that takes place about bonds. And a study of gradual decline. Just how Julie Christie manages to preserve her Fiona in the status of dissolution, dignity, charm and beauty, that is perhaps the greatest achievement of this debut, which is hopeful despite all the tragedy. "
  • Frankfurter Rundschau , February 16, 2007: "When it comes to this topic, you can think of a lot that can be done wrong, but Polley does everything right in a wonderful way and neither puts her audience in the lukewarm emotional bath nor does she beg for sympathy."
  • ZDF -Online, February 11, 2007, Christian Raupach: “Julie Christie's portrayal is, one can say that here, an acting revelation. The enchantingly fine lady and loving wife who slowly disappears from her husband - her natural, erotic charisma casts a spell. But also the other actors, including Olympia Dukakis, make this film an acting experience. "
  • Perlentaucher , February 14, 2007: “Sarah Polley has just turned 28 years old. That she was able to make such a coherent and impressive film about a couple who have been married longer than they have been in the world is a little scary. "
