Snap! is a Eurodance and Trance project founded in Germany in 1989 by Frankfurt producers Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti (previously known as 16 BIT and together with Sven Väth as OFF ).

With their first work The Power they achieved an international hit in the spring of 1990, which combined elements from hip-hop and dance . Other hit singles followed such as Ooops Up (1990), Rhythm Is a Dancer (1992) and Welcome to Tomorrow (Are You Ready?) (1994).

After Münzing and Anzilotti turned more trance soundscapes from 1996 onwards, there were no further successes outside of Germany.

history

The studio project Snap !, consisting of the music producers Benito Benites (Michael Münzing) and John Virgo Garrett III (Luca Anzilotti), was named after a function in a sequencer program. At that time Münzing and Anzilotti were considered to be the founders of Eurodance because they successfully competed with American dance music producers.

The first title and number one hit by Snap !, The Power , was a plagiarism in the original version. The song, a mix of house and hip-hop elements, contained some illicit elements from the drum loop of King of the Beats by Mantronix, the rap Let the Words Flow by Chill Rob G and the Classic Line I've Got the Power from Love's Gonna Get You by Jocelyn Brown . First Muenzing and Anzilotti allowed the title does not bring out - all copies were pulped and a new version with the rapper Turbo B . was recorded.

The Snap !, the snapping hand, is also a copy of the logo of the American label Stax Records , which featured acts such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and the BarKays in the 1970s.

Composition and Achievements

Initially the rapper Turbo B. (born April 30, 1967 in Pittsburgh / Pennsylvania ; real name: Durron Maurice Butler) was the face of Snap! and appeared with the constantly changing singers as the "frontman" of the formation, although it was precisely these singers who contributed significantly to the success of the project with their expressive voices. So at the beginning Jackie Harris, Penny Ford and, with Rhythm Is a Dancer , Thea Austin (born June 10, 1967) could be heard. The main melody of the song is based on the early 80s song Auto-Man by Newcleus , an electronic hip-hop group.

The song Money from the album The Madman's Return (1992) also contains this melody. For the singles Exterminate (1992) and Do You See the Light (Looking For) (1993) Anzilotti and Münzing engaged Niki Haris (born April 17, 1962 in Benton Harbor / Michigan ), who had become known as Madonna's accompanist . For the new sound of Snap !, which from 1993 tended more towards trance , no rap parts were built into the songs from now on, which made Turbo B. superfluous as a rapper.

After Niki Haris, Summer (born Paula Brown, born December 27, 1967 in Washington, DC ) was hired as the singer for most of the songs on the third album Welcome to Tomorrow (1994) (Summer had already made recordings by artists such as Paula Abdul or Snoop Doggy Dogg ). The title song made it to number 1 in France, while it reached number 4 in Germany and also went platinum. Summer is next to Snap! also involved in many other projects as a singer and dancer. Today she lives in Washington, DC and is u. a. Lecturer at the Washington Ballet.

comeback

In 2000 a restart with Turbo B. and Maxayn was tried with Gimme a Thrill . The single was released on May 6, 2000 and reached number 11 on the German Black Music Charts. The accompanying album One Day on Earth was only distributed as a promo by BMG. It contains ten complete tracks that are very reminiscent of old songs.

In the spring of 2002 Turbo B. returned to Snap! back who tried to make a comeback with contemporary remixes of their old hits. However, these revised versions were rather dubious and, according to fans, could not come close to the originals. Nevertheless, there were top 10 hits, such as The Cult of Noise with Infernal in Denmark or Rhythm Is a Dancer with CJ Stone in Germany.

2005 songs for the new album were recorded in Los Angeles, New York and Frankfurt with the singer Sarah Martin and neo-soul singer Loc aka Damien Behenan; so far it has not been published. The advance single Beauty Queen was also only available for DJs in Germany. After all, it reached the Top 10 of the German Dance Charts and the Top 30 of the US Billboard Dance Charts. The single was later released as a download, and a video was shown frequently on VIVA.

In 2006 two vinyl maxis appeared on the German market. Excited and the double-A-side We Want Your Soul / Shake That Ass came from the US session in 2005 and ran in clubs without ever being released regularly or as a download.

After another two years off broadcast, Rhythm Is a Dancer was released in May 2008 in a new remixed guise. For the first time in five years, Snap! with the download-only single in the regular German charts. In England there was even a real hit due to a commercial that made the song famous again. In August 2008, Jumping came out as a download-only single without being able to place itself.

In October 2009, Snap !, initially only in England, for its 20th anniversary, released another sampler entitled The Power - Greatest Hits , which contained all the successes as well as ten current remixes and a new megamix. This album was released in Germany in May 2010, accompanied by the release of Rhythm Is a Dancer 2010 , a six-track maxi that was released as a download. Detached from the album, the new Megamix contained on the album sold very well in Germany and entered the Top 100 of the Media Control Charts.

For several years now, Penny Ford has been an official formation under the name Snap! Together with a new rapper. on. In addition, the former rapper from Snap !, Turbo B., is back with his hits from Snap! on tour.
