Little True Lies (original title: Les Petits Mouchoirs ) is a French tragicomedy from 2010. The ensemble film with François Cluzet , Marion Cotillard and Benoît Magimel in the leading roles is the third feature film directing work by the actor Guillaume Canet and is about a group of Parisian friends who, after her friend Ludo's life-threatening traffic accident, spends the holidays together in Cap Ferret as every year - and suddenly finds herself confronted with all kinds of problems.

The film was shot between August and October 2009 in Paris and Lège-Cap-Ferret on the Atlantic coast, among others . In France, it became the most successful domestic production of 2010, with more than 5.3 million viewers. Critics disliked the length of the film, but unanimously praised the performance as well as the staging. Actors Valérie Bonneton and Gilles Lellouche received César nominations for their portrayals in Little True Lies in 2011 .

action

As every year, the wealthy and generous Parisian restaurant owner Max Cantara invites his friends and family to the south of France to spend the holidays together in his domicile on Cap Ferret. The annual vacation is overshadowed this time by the motorcycle accident of their mutual friend Ludo, who is now seriously injured in hospital. After a bedside visit, the group finally decides to shorten the vacation from the original four weeks to 14 days due to Ludo's poor condition.

Once at the travel destination, however, long-suppressed conflicts emerge. The eternally stressed Max does not manage to deal with his friend Vincent's confession of love and thus creates increasing tension in the group - much to the chagrin of his wife Véro, who comments with defiance on her husband's strange behavior. The chiropractor and no less confused family man Vincent tried meanwhile to keep up appearances while his frustrated wife Isabelle substitute intercourse in computer RPGs practiced. Young actor Eric, on the other hand, is confronted with the separation from his girlfriend Lea; she no longer wants to tolerate his infidelities and fends off any attempts at recovery. Ludo's former friend, the life-hungry but melancholy development worker Marie, who stumbles from one affair to the next, ponders her own inability to have a relationship. And Antoine, obsessed by his ex-girlfriend Juliette, annoys the group with his lack of independence, which should ultimately lead to success.

After a video evening together , the situation finally escalates when Max carelessly alludes to Vincent's homosexuality in front of the entire group . He then knocks Max to the ground and leaves with his family without further ado. One day later, the remaining troops meet with their friend, the fisherman Jean-Louis, who criticizes the group for their dishonest behavior towards each other (the statement that is already conveyed in the film title). He also reveals after a phone call with Vincent that Ludo died a few hours ago in the hospital. The clique then arrives a little later in Paris, where they say goodbye to Ludo during the funeral and Max and Vincent are reconciled.

criticism

“Beach, red wine and confusion of love - director Guillaume Canet's audience success about friendship, love and little secrets is a rather entertaining, bittersweet pleasure despite the proud, somewhat too long running time of 154 minutes. With its excellent ensemble, the tragic comedy "Little True Lies" is recommended as a summer film par excellence, despite small weaknesses. "

“Sometimes you need a shock to drop your mask or at least let it crumble. In the funny, charming and at the same time very sad film "Small, True Lies", it is Ludo's accident that changes the life of an entire clique [...] It all sounds like many clichés and even more kitsch, but thanks to the many great ones it is great Actors, an all-too-human story, and lots of charming jokes are beautiful to look at. Five million viewers in France should be proof of this. "

“The fact that you never tire of watching despite the flaws in the content is due to Canet's mostly sure feeling for timing, for authentic dialogues with high recognition value and emotional tact. His main focus is on the heartache of men, but any complaint that arises is stopped in time with a change of perspective and panorama to the beach, the sea and carefree loss. In other words: there is always something going on. The polyphonic choir of friends alternates between major and minor, with dangling to boulevard-esque slapstick. "
