Palm Circle , also known as the Pineapple Pentagon , is a Historic District in Fort Shafter in Honolulu County on the Hawaiian island of Oahu .
Palm Circle originally served as accommodation for an infantry battalion and was laid out around a parade ground lined with palm trees. After the attack on Pearl Harbor and the entry of the United States into World War II , the headquarters of the United States Army for the command area of the Pacific was established in Palm Circle. From 1944, the US Army was supplied and managed from here in the Pacific Ocean Areas (POA) command area , which included the South and Central Pacific. From 1943 to 1945, under the command of General Robert C. Richardson, Jr. , Palm Circle prepared logistical operations such as the Battle of the Gilbert Islands , the Battle of Guam , the Battle of the Palau Islands, and the Battle of Okinawa . As commanding officer, Richardson oversaw the construction of Richardson Hall , known as the Pineapple Pentagon , which was completed in just a few months.
On October 26, 1984, Palm Circle was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District . It has been a National Historic Landmark since May 28, 1987 .
