Ronald Houston Griffith (* 16th March 1936 in LaFayette , Georgia , † 18th July 2018 ) was an American officer of the US Army , who most recently as General between 1995 and 1997 Vice-Chief of the Army General Staff ( Vice Chief of Staff of the Army ) .

Life

Officer training and the Vietnam War

After attending school, Ronald Houston Griffith began studying at the University of Georgia , which he completed in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). During this time he trained as a reserve officer in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) of the University of Georgia and was accepted as a lieutenant in the US Army after completing his studies . Between 1964 and 1965 he was employed as an advisor to an infantry unit in South Vietnam for the first time in the Vietnam War and attended a course for officers of the armored forces. He also completed a postgraduate course in administration at Shippensburg University , which he completed with a Master of Arts (MA Public Administration). As deputy commander ( Executive Officer ) of the 2nd Battalion of the 4th Infantry Division ( 4th Infantry Division ) belonging to the 8th Infantry Regiment, he served from 1969 to 1970 again in the Vietnam War.

Griffith was also a graduate of Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth and commander of the 1st Battalion of the 32nd Armor Regiment stationed in the Federal Republic of Germany . Furthermore, he visited in 1980, the US Army War College (USAWC) in Carlisle and was the administrative staff officer at the Deputy Chief of the Army Staff for operations and planning, commander of the 2nd Infantry Division ( 2nd Infantry Division ) belonging to the 1st Brigade, head of the war planning and chief department of the staff of the 1st Cavalry Division. He was also deputy commander of the Fort Hood stationed 1st Cavalry Division ( 1st Cavalry Division ) and deputy director of operations in the Army staff.

Second Gulf War, promotion to general and retired roles

In August 1989 Ronald H. Griffith took over from Major General Frederick M. Franks, Jr. the post of commander of the Old Ironsides called 1st Armored Division ( 1st Armored Division ) , with which he participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in the Second Gulf War . In July 1991, Lieutenant General Griffith replaced Lieutenant General Johnnie H. Corns as Inspector General of the US Army and remained in this position until 1996, when he was succeeded by Lieutenant General Larry R. Jordan .

Last Griffith in 1995 became the General transported and replaced General John H. Tilelli, Jr. as Vice Chief of the General Staff of the Army ( Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army ) from. He held this position until his retirement from active military service on November 1, 1997, whereupon General William W. Crouch was his successor there.

After his retirement, he became Executive Vice President of the private security and military company Military Professional Resources Incorporated (MPRI) and Executive Vice President of L3 Technologies . He was also a board member of The Allied Defense Group and Geonex-Martel Incorporated and a member of the board of trustees of the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). He was with Dr. Hurdis M. Griffith who was the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing at Rutgers University . From this marriage two daughters were born. After his death he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
