Paul Edward Madeley (born September 20, 1944 in Leeds / Yorkshire , England , † July 23, 2018 there ) was an English football player . The player, who can be used in many positions, was part of the successful Leeds United team in the 1960s and 1970s and between 1971 and 1977 he made 24 international matches for the English national football team .

Athletic career

Madeley was a "football player without a regular position". In his long career, which began in January 1964, he held all positions with the exception of goalkeeper . The coach Don Revie took advantage of Madeley's versatility and regularly used him as a substitute for an injured or suspended player. At first he let him play mainly on the defensive. However, the great club successes under Revie could mostly be celebrated when Madeley stepped up the offensive.

Since 1966 Madeley was a permanent member of the Leeds United team. He scored a decisive goal in the game against Juventus Turin , which he was instrumental in winning the trade fair cup . He wore both the traditional attacking jersey with the number 8, with which the striker Allan Clarke would later achieve great fame, as well as the number 10, which was usually reserved for attacking midfielders. In the same year defeated Leeds in the League Cup to Arsenal in Wembley with 1: 0th During the game, Madeley wore the number 9.

Madeley was also to be found in his 31 appearances in the league in several positions and helped the club in 1969 to win the English championship. In 1970 Paul Reaney broke his leg just before the end of the season. Madeley replaced him permanently from this moment as a right -back , trying in vain as Leeds to win three competitions. In the championship, the team had to admit defeat against Everton FC , defeated Celtic Glasgow in the semi-finals of the European Cup and in the repeat final of the FA Cup against Chelsea .

Madeley's good club performance also aroused the interest of English national coach Alf Ramsey , who wanted to include him in the squad for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico . Until then, Madeley had only played in the youth teams as a teenager. Since he rated the chance of being used as low, he declined the offer. Madeley, who had never been called up to the English team at this point, preferred a recovery period after the exhausting season. In the following season Madeley completed his games mostly as the classic number 11 in the position of the left winger and won the trade fair cup with his team again in the summer of 1971. In addition, he made his debut for the English national team.

In the following year, Madeley never missed a game when injuries and bans on his teammates required his constant commitment. However, the club gambled away winning another English championship on the last day of the match. When Terry Cooper broke his leg in April 1972, Madeley replaced him as a left-back. As four years before, he won the league cup again with a 1-0 win against Arsenal.

Revie filled the left back with the purchase of Trevor Cherry in the summer of 1972 and Madeley moved to the center of the defensive as Jack Charlton's career came to an end. In the role of number 5, he lost with his team in the FA Cup final against Sunderland . Only a few weeks later, he moved again to the left winger position, where he lost in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup against AC Milan .

Leeds was able to win the English championship again in 1974. Madeley only missed three league games. In the summer, Revie left the club to take over the English national team. Leeds United reached the final in the national championship competition, but that would be the team's last European final in the next 21 years. Madeley acted as a central defender and thus occupied the seventh different position in his eighth cup final. The team lost the match 2-0 to Bayern Munich .

The Leeds United team was now getting on in years and could not celebrate any notable successes in the following period. Madeley stayed with the club until 1980 and played a particularly good season in 1977. When he resigned as a footballer after 711 games for Leeds United, he opened a sports shop in Leeds and also worked in the family business (a furniture store). After that, there was no other football player at this high sporting level who could celebrate successes in such different positions.
