Leibnitz Monastery

The monastery Leibnitz is the oldest existing Capuchin monastery of Styria . It is right in the city of Leibnitz .

history

The monastery was founded by Otto Gottfried Graf von Kollonitsch , a privy councilor of Emperor Ferdinand II . In 1639 the Prince-Bishop of Seckau , Johann Markus Graf von Altringen , laid the foundation stone for the monastery. The church in honor of the Holy Cross and St. Andrew the Apostle was consecrated in 1643.

In 1856 the house was rebuilt and expanded. In 1940 the monks were expelled from the monastery by the National Socialists , but were able to return there in 1945. After the Second World War , part of the monastery served as a retreat house for a time , and until 2001 also as a study monastery for Polish theology students .
