The battle of Châteaudun on October 18, 1870 between parts of the French Loire Army and units of the Bavarian I. Army Corps under the command of General von der Tann was a battle in the Franco-Prussian War . Châteaudun is located almost 50 kilometers northwest of Orléans .
The army division, which was formed from the Bavarian corps, the 22nd Prussian infantry and the 1st and 4th cavalry divisions, occupied the city on October 10 after the first battle near Orléans .
After the capture of Orléans, the 22nd infantry and 4th cavalry divisions had been withdrawn from these formations to support the encircling army outside Paris. These units received the order to clear the area around Châteaudun and Chartres from French associations.
The French were in command of Colonel Fabien, and the irregulars were under the command of Comte E. de Lipowski (also spelled Lipowsky ).
Lieutenant General Ludwig von Wittich reached Châteaudun on October 18, 1870 with his 22nd division and a few cavalry units. The first attempt to capture the city failed because the city was very strongly defended. Von Wittich then prepared the second attack so thoroughly that the defenders were blinded by the setting sun.
The Prussians reached the outskirts, where they were involved in a long and bloody house-to-house battle with regular units and rioters. This battle lasted long after dark before the French surrendered. After this fight, which was also conducted irregularly, punitive measures were taken on some of the residents who had been arrested, and parts of the city were set on fire.
The city of Chartres was captured on October 21 without major fighting.
The fighting led the German high command to the false assumption that larger enemy formations must be in this area, but in fact it was XV. and XVI. Corps still on the Loire or at Salbris.
