Northern Burgenland forms a plain north of the Ödenburger Mountains in the districts of Eisenstadt , Eisenstadt-Umgebung , Neusiedl am See , Mattersburg and Rust . Central Burgenland, consisting of the Oberpullendorf district , is hilly and is separated from the hilly southern Burgenland in the south by the Günser Mountains . Southern Burgenland consists of the districts of Güssing , Jennersdorf and Oberwart .

The Rust district is the smallest district in Austria, both in terms of area and population, and therefore also in Burgenland . The largest district in Burgenland according to the same parameters is the Neusiedl am See district , but in terms of population density it is in last place. Eisenstadt has the highest population density .

The district in Northern Burgenland surrounds Eisenstadt. In addition, it borders in the north on the Lower Austrian districts of Bruck an der Leitha and Baden , in the west on the also Lower Austrian district of Wiener Neustadt . In the south, the Mattersburg district and the small Hungarian area of Sopron-Fertőd in the Győr-Moson-Sopron county border, in the east on the statutory town of Rust and the district of Neusiedl am See.

Güssing is located in southern Burgenland and borders in the north on the Oberwart district, in the west on the Styrian district Hartberg-Fürstenfeld and in the south on the Jennersdorf district. In the east and south, the Hungarian county of Vas borders with the small areas of Szombathely , Körmend and Szentgotthárd .

Jennersdorf is located in southern Burgenland and borders the Styrian districts of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld and Southeast Styria in the west and the Güssing district in the north. In the south the Slovenian občine (municipalities) Kuzma and Rogašovci form the border, in the east the Hungarian small area Szentgotthárd in Vas County .

The Neusiedl am See district is located in Northern Burgenland and borders in the northeast on Slovakia with the Okres Bratislava V , in the north on the Lower Austrian district of Bruck an der Leitha and in the west on the Eisenstadt-Umgebung district and the statutory town of Rust.
