history
Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg . Under the Romans, today's Breitenbrunn was located in the province of Pannonia .
The place got its name from a mineral water spring located there. The German name is first recorded as Praittenbrunn in 1257 . In Hungarian it appears for the first time in 1332 as Praytunbpron in vulgari hungarico Zyluskuth , from which the current Hungarian form Fertőszéleskút (literally Breitenbrunn am Neusiedlersee ) has developed.
Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Fertőszéleskút be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). Breitenbrunn has been a market town since 1689.
In 2010, by resolution of the state government, Breitenbrunn was renamed to Breitenbrunn am Neusiedler See in order to express the community's attachment to Lake Neusiedl in the name.
