Eltendorf (Hungarian: Ókörtvélyes ) is an Austrian municipality in the Jennersdorf district in Burgenland , with 920 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

Geographical location

The community is located in southern Burgenland.

Community structure

The municipality includes the following two localities and cadastral communities of the same name (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Eltendorf (560) including the Hochkogel and Käferberg
  • Zahling (360) including Bobisberg, Käferberg, Meisterberg, Oberharberg, Unterharberg and Windenegg

history

The place belonged, like the whole of Burgenland, to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Ókörtvélyes be used.

After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

  • Evangelical Parish Church Eltendorf : Single-nave hall church built in 1791, the southern facade tower is provided with a pointed helmet.
  • Catholic branch church St. Laurentius: Small, originally Romanesque, single-aisled church with a lowered, semi-circular apse. During the last renovation, restorers from the Federal Monuments Office uncovered sensational Romanesque frescoes in the apse. The church is located in Zahling.
