history

Barrow- in Kögelwald and excavations in the years 1922/25 discovered Lost property (urns, pots, rings and a 12 cm Jupiter Statuette) indicate an early settlement close the area.

The foundation letter for the Güssing Benedictines from 1157 describes the inhabitants of the Lafnitz valley as "Theotonici" (Germans), and a certificate from King Andreas III. from 1291 the border area near Styria is called "terra hospitum", which means "the land of guests". These "guests" were Germans. Königsdorf was under the power of the Güssing counts and in 1327 was a royal estate. In the award document of King Sigismund for Peter Cheh de Leva, with which the Güssing province was handed over to him in 1428, the place name Königsdorf (Kyralfalwa) is mentioned for the first time in 1428. Whether it is a royal possession or a royal foundation has not been researched. In the Catholic parish register it is recorded that the name comes from a chapel that was built in honor of King Stephen .

Baron Franz von Batthyány (1590–1625) sided with the Austrians in the Boczkay War . Therefore, the troops of Boczkay, consisting of Haiducken , devastated his domains in 1605, including Königsdorf.

At the time of the Kuruzan Wars , Königsdorf was destroyed in August 1704 by the Styrians embittered by the Hungarian invasions, like many other Batthyány villages .

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Királyfalva be used.

After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. From August 31 to November 1, 1921 Königsdorf was during the conquest of the castle country occupied by Hungarian irregulars who in clashes with the in Gillersdorf were involved quartered Austrian gendarmes. From November 13th to 30th, 1921, the military finally took the Königsdorf area to Austria.

The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

The municipality attracted state political attention in 2005 with a poll against the will of the majority faction in the municipal council on the subject of the Fürstenfeld expressway S 7, with around 80% speaking out against the construction of the expressway.

Culture and sights

  • Catholic parish church Königsdorf hl. Stephan: The church was built from 1757 to 1759 on the site of a wooden church. Count Ludwig Batthyány donated the building site and the cemetery square. In 1757 the cemetery was laid out by the church.

Economy and Infrastructure

Around 1900 the community had so much income from the sale of wood and the proceeds from the meadows that no community levy had to be levied.

In 1995, the Berg Bräu Löffler, the first pub brewery in southern Burgenland, was founded in Königsdorf . The yeast-cloudy varieties “Helles Märzen ” and “Dunkles Spezial” are brewed . After economic turmoil, the Berg Bräu had to close its doors in the meantime, but was reopened as a beer tavern in August 2007 with the help of the former owner .

Other important economic factors include a. the Spritkönig petrol station on Europastraße 66 with an adjoining inn and the restaurants and bars around the Jaindl family (Traverse, GH Römersiedlung).

The natural bathing lake is seen as a showcase project for the future economic orientation of the community, in the vicinity of which natural, gentle tourism is slowly developing. The merger with the neighboring communities of Rudersdorf , Eltendorf and Heiligenkreuz in Lafnitztal in the Wasserwelt Königsdorf Ges.mbH with the involvement of the gravel mining company is intended to accelerate further expansion.

As a basically rural municipality, Königsdorf is still strongly characterized by agriculture, although the development since Austria's accession to the EU has moved from small-scale structures towards a few large farmers.

education

The Catholic schoolhouse was built in 1860 under the teacher Franz Scherzer, who worked in Königsdorf for 60 years. In 1870 a second class was established. The Catholic children from Eltendorf also attended the elementary school in Königsdorf. The Protestant children from Königsdorf went to elementary school in Eltendorf.

In 1867 the first Protestant teacher (Josef Mattes, a native of Königsdorf) was elected. He taught the children in house no. 72. In the years 1869/70 the Protestant school house was built. In 1943, the evangelical pastor Augustin bought house No. 142 in the mountains from the community. The house was demolished and a schoolhouse was to be built in its place for the Bergler children. The plans for this were already in place. However, since the required number of children was not sufficient for the next five years, the new school was not built.
