The Mur Cycle Path is a 475 km long and well-traveled Austrian cycle path that runs along the Mur from Lungau ( State of Salzburg ) through the Mur Valley to southern Styria and on to Slovenia and Croatia .

The montage shows the beginning of the Mur Cycling Path at the Sticklerhütte in Salzburg and its Austrian end in Styria just before the border with Slovenia near Sicheldorf

Course of the bike path

The Mur Cycle Path often runs on both sides of the river at the same time, and you can switch from one side to the other via bridges and footbridges. The picture shows the Erich-Edegger-Steg in Graz .
The pedestrian and cyclist bridge near Halbenrain connects the Mur cycle path on the Austrian side of the Mur with the cycle path network on the Slovenian side

The cycle path begins near the source of the Mur at 1752  m above sea level. A. Height at the Sticklerhütte and runs partly on public roads, but mostly on side streets or cycle paths along or near the river. From its beginning in Lungau it has a permanent slight gradient to its end in Legrad .

The cycle path leads via Tamsweg , Murau , Unzmarkt , Judenburg , Leoben , Bruck an der Mur and Frohnleiten to the Styrian capital Graz . From there it runs via Wildon , Leibnitz , Spielfeld , Bad Radkersburg , Melinci , Gornja Bistrica , Razkrižje , Sveti Martin , Mursko Središće , Podturen and Goričan to the Croatian Legrad , where the Mur flows into the Drava .

Rail connection

There is always a railway line running parallel to the cycle path from Tamsweg to Bad Radkersburg, so that there are train stations or stops within a few kilometers that allow you to travel there or back by train. In Slovenia and Croatia it is difficult to use public transport due to the local conditions. An alternative is the return service of a local travel agency.

practical information

The Mur Cycle Path (R2) runs over some stretches simultaneously on both sides of the Mur, for example from Frohnleiten to Wildon , although mostly one side of the river has a much nicer route. For example, you should drive from Frohnleiten to Graz on the right (i.e. western) side of the river in order to avoid driving next to expressways and federal highways as much as possible. It is noteworthy that you only have to cross three to four street crossings when driving through the city center of Graz; the bridges in the north of the city span both the Mur and the cycle path. The Mur Cycle Path is now almost completely signposted. In the province of Salzburg you will find green signs with the inscription "Mur Cycle Path", in Styria it is signposted as R2 and in Slovenia and Croatia you will find blue signs with a cyclist on them.

Tourist importance

Every year on Corpus Christi, the "Tour de Mur", which has been known for more than two decades, starts in Lungau in Salzburg. This tour takes the participants to Bad Radkersburg in three stages. The goal of the first day is the arena in Fohnsdorf . On the second day, the tour continues to Graz's main square and finally ends on the third day in Bad Radkersburg, where the Pannonian Old Town Festival takes place in the city center this weekend.
