Mursko Središće (Hungarian Muraszerdahely ) is a small town in the far north of Croatia , which lies on the Croatian border with Slovenia . Mursko Središće has been a town since March 22, 1997. It is located on the right bank of the Mur River and consists of five localities: Hlapičina, Križovec, Mursko Središće, Peklenica and Štrukovec.

history

Since 1638, Mursko Središće , along with Podturen , Čakovec , Prelog , Nedelišće and Štrigova , has been one of the most important towns in Međimurje . The city is one of the oldest settlements. Today's Church of St. Martin was mentioned under the name of Sancti Martini in Zredysche as early as 1334. Historians claim that there was a settlement called Halicanum here as early as the times of the old Roman Empire. This settlement played an important role as the stop on the Roman Poetovio ( Ptuj ) - Carnuntum ( Petronell ) street. The settlement can later be found under the name Mura Zerdahel .

The beginning of the 19th century was very important for the development of the town because the railway line was built in 1889, followed by the first road between Čakovec and Lendava . Since 1850 the inhabitants of Selnica and Peklenica were engaged in oil drilling and after the Second World War they started working in the coal mines. The first coal mine in Međimurje was called Hrastinka 1 . The miners have extracted 4,593,961 tons of coal in Hrastinka 1 from its establishment in 1925 until it closed in 1972. At that time, the coal mines were responsible for the economic development of Mursko Središće.

economy

The most important branch of the economy today is industry . The textile industry ( Modeks , MTČ ), trade and gastronomy (18 restaurants in MS) are the most developed, only a few people are still involved in agriculture today . The city is home to the tax authority, a post office, a branch of the Međimurje Bank , an INA petrol station, a clinic, a veterinary clinic, a city library and one of the largest primary schools in the region.

traffic

The city developed rapidly thanks to its geographical location. Because it is on the border with Slovenia, the city is an important transport hub, but it is also burdened with daily traffic, especially in summer when tourists travel to Croatia. One tries to solve the problem by asking for another border crossing so that the traffic in Mursko Središće is reduced.

Culture

The first choir was founded in 1927. After the Second World War until 1989, the Association of Workers, Culture and Education called Karlo Mrazović and today the Association of Art and Culture called Mura operated here . This has about 100 members and consists of a choir, a theater group, a folklore group, brass musicians and tamburica players.
