history

In the historical sources, Domašinec is mentioned for the first time in 1244, in connection with Prince Petrina. He owned a property called Damasa, or Doma-sa. But there was a feudal estate called Damaša before. In the middle of the 14th century, more precisely in 1349, the term Damasa is mentioned in the area between the rivers Mur and Drava. But the current name Domašinec (Domassi-necz) was first mentioned in 1478. In 1672 Domašinec was the administrative seat of one of the thirteen judicates in Međimurje County. The following settlements belonged to the judiciary: Dekanovec, Novakovec, Gardinovec, Belica, Pribislavec, Mihovljan and Gornji Pustakovec. At the end of the 18th century, Domašinec was a fairly large and for that time rich settlement. The residents were mainly occupied with beekeeping, handicrafts and they grew tobacco in large quantities. The first official census took place in 1785. At that time, Domašinec had 811 inhabitants. Over a hundred year period, the population grew by 50%, which was very small. Only 595 people by 1785 were literate.

In 1992 Domašinec was formed as an independent territorial unit and unit of local self-government.
