Belica - town center |
Belica is a Croatian town in the County of Međimurje . The place has 3,176 inhabitants and covers an area of 27.75 km² (as of 2011). The main branch of the economy is the textile industry and agriculture with a focus on potato production.
The Belica municipality consists of the localities Belica and Gardinovec. It lies in a low plain and, in a geographical sense, separates the lower from the upper part of the Međimurje district.
The continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters and an annual temperature difference of over 50 ° C, as well as moderate winds from north and south, has been documented for over a hundred years. Most of the precipitation falls between May and July and averages between 845 and 862 mm. Clouds of fog are not uncommon during autumn, especially between Belica and the town of Čakovec .
Historically, the villages of Belica and Gardinovec were part of landowners from Čakovec, but also part of smaller landowners. The first historical references to the present day Belica date back to 1256 when the Bela / Terra Beoslova estate. A hundred years later, the Belc / Belch property between the rivers Mur and Drava is mentioned. The name Stephanus Bekoych / Stjepan Bekoić de Belic, manager of a landlord from Čakovec, appears in the history books in 1478.
