Alexei Kirillowitsch Simonow (German also: Alexej Simonow, Russian Алексей Кириллович Симонов , scientific transliteration Aleksej Kirillovič Simonov ; born August 8, 1939 in Moscow ) is a Russian author, director and human rights activist. Simonov is President of the Foundation for the Defense of Glasnost .

biography

Alexei Simonow was born in Moscow as the son of the Soviet writer Konstantin Simonow . In 1956 he joined the School of English with honors, after which he moved as an assistant with an expedition to the cold pole in the Siberian Yakutia . From 1958 to 1964 he studied Asian languages ​​at the Indonesian department of Moscow's Lomonosov University , and from 1963/64 he worked as a translator in Jakarta and Surabaya. After completing his studies, he worked as an editor for a book publisher. From 1968 to 1970 he studied cinema directing and made 20 films in various genres from 1970 to 1991. From 1991 to 1995 he was a teacher at the Institute of Cinematography in Moscow. Since 1991 he has headed the Glasnost Defense Foundation. As such, he is a sought-after discussion partner for Western media and human rights organizations on the subject of freedom of the press in Russia.
