Foundation for the Defense of Glasnost

The Foundation for the Defense of Glasnost ( Russian : Фонд защиты гласности English: Glasnost Defense Foundation) is a Russian organization founded in 1991 and based in Moscow . Its aim is to promote and spread freedom of the press in Russia and the rest of the CIS countries . Its president is Alexei Kirillovich Simonov .

For Russia, the foundation publishes a weekly report on the state of press freedom. This report is sent to the first chamber of the Russian parliament , journalism schools, non-governmental organizations and media associations. It also publishes ten to twelve books a year on current media law problems.

The foundation provides legal support for media employees in Russia , and it operates ten bases in Russia. It observes the media landscape and registers violations of the freedom of the press. She holds seminars for journalists, lawyers and human rights activists on the subject of press law. In Ukraine , Belarus , Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan , it runs various programs to enforce freedom of the press.

The foundation works closely with organizations such as the Committee to Protect Journalists , Reporters Without Borders , Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International . The Foundation for the Defense of Glasnost is financed or organizationally supported by, among others, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation , the Konrad Adenauer Foundation , the Open Society Institute , UNESCO and the governments of Switzerland , Great Britain and Canada .
