Erich Edegger (born January 30, 1940 , † October 28, 1992 in Graz ) was an Austrian local politician .

Life

Edegger continued the family business of the Edegger-Tax Hofbäckerei , so he had to give up his studies at the University of Graz and resign from his student association K.Ö.HV Carolina Graz in the ÖCV (later the honorary ribbon was awarded and thus re-admission). He was also made an honorary senator by his former university in 1988.

Through his involvement in the ÖVP , he came to the Graz municipal council in 1971 and was finally deputy mayor of the city of Graz in 1983. As a “cycling pioneer” (without a car driver's license), he pushed ahead with the expansion of cycle paths and public transport (for example, the Graz tram network was expanded for the first time since 1941) and introduced “Tempo 30” on the side streets in Graz for traffic and environmental reasons .

In autumn 1992 he suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and died after days of fighting in the intensive care unit. He is buried in the St. Leonhard Cemetery in Graz .

Bicycle traffic

  • Activists around room planners Günther Tischler and Peter Hagenauer , who marked the "first cycle path" in Graz at night on the eastern sidewalk of Wilhelm-Fischer-Allee in 1980, which the Kleine Zeitung reported in the evening edition , were caught by the police. Edegger bought the used bike logo template, which compensated for an administrative penalty and, through intervention, ensured that no proceedings were initiated for damage to property or presumption of office.
  • Erich Edegger spoke at the symposium for cycling around 1990 in Linz , Tourotel: "We have to appreciate cyclists who ride in winter, because they ride in a time of tense air conditions." From the point of view of desired traffic development, towards mobility free of air pollutants. In Linz and Upper Austria, the prevailing opinion at that time was "Nobody cycles in winter anyway" and cycle routes and cycle paths - for example along the flood dam to the university - were not or only marginally cleared of snow.
  • The “ Erich-Edegger-Steg ” in Graz was named after him on the initiative of the ARGUS Steiermark bike lobby - a bridge over the Mur river only for pedestrians and cyclists. The Mur Cycle Path crosses or crossed the Mur here.
  • “Erich-Edegger-Weg” is the name of a section of the cycle route “R23” in Graz-Mariatrost , which was built around 2000/2005 .
