Great Saint Florian

Groß Sankt Florian is a market town with 4130 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Deutschlandsberg district in Styria . Since 2015 it has been merged with the municipality of Unterbergla as part of the Styrian municipal structural reform , the new municipality continues to use the name "Groß Sankt Florian".

The municipality of Groß Sankt Florian is located in the Laßnitz valley , in the western Styrian hill country and is traversed by the Laßnitz , the Vocherabach and the Rassachbach. There are also several ponds in the municipality.

The border to Deutschlandsberg is only approx. 60 m long. This border piece lies in the west of the KG Tanzelsdorf on the course of the Vochera brook, beyond that in Deutschlandsberg lies the KG Gersdorf (formerly the municipality of Gams).

history

Parts of the community are located in the Laßnitz valley in that area in which a series of archaeological sites has proven dense settlement since the Bronze Age. The total area of archaeological excavations in this area is over 40 hectares.

The Roman road in the Laßnitz valley ran near Gussendorf in the Laßnitz valley, which made at least three bridges necessary.

The first documentary mention of part of the community is from the year 1056. Emperor Heinrich III. awarded the Salzburg Archbishop Balduin on July 3, 1056 in Worms an area in Gumbrahtdesteiden (Gumprechtstätten = Great St. Florian), which was the size of three royal hooves . The place had its own parish church in the past . The church of St. Florian with its pastor was first mentioned in 1136. For the year 1265, a remote settlement ( desert ) called Walhesreut is documented southwest of the place Groß St. Florian , which is traced back to a clearing and the personal name Walcho .

However, Romanesque settlers are also referred to by the Bavarians as Walchen , which must be taken into account when deriving names. Whether this location derives its first part of the name from the old German personal name or from Romanesque settlers (this area was evangelized from Aquileia, see Ortisei ) has not been finally decided.

At the latest at the end of the 14th century, St. Florian was raised to the status of a market , and in 1380 St. Florian was mentioned in a document as "forum sancti Floriani" (Market of St. Florian ). Until its reorganization in 1786, the place and parish belonged to the diocese Lavant , whose episcopal canteen they had been incorporated into in 1371. The leading priest of the parish bore the title " vicarius perpetuus " (parish vicar). Dornegg Castle was probably built as a fortified castle by Christoph von Raknitz before 1529, before it was converted into a late Baroque residential castle by the Schönborn family in the 18th century . If the name St. Florian was common since the 12th century , the place name was changed to Groß Sankt Florian in 1887 .

On January 1st, 1968, the municipalities of Grünau an der Laßnitz, Gussendorf and Petzelsdorf in western Styria were incorporated.

On January 1, 1969, Kraubath (West Styria) and Lebing were incorporated. The Lebing community, for its part, had only emerged a year earlier from the former communities of Krottendorf an der Laßnitz, Lebing, Tanzelsdorf and Vochera an der Laßnitz.

The communities of Gussendorf, Kraubath and Petzelsdorf emerged in 1920 from the division of the former community of Gussendorf, within the framework of which the cadastral communities of Wohlsdorf and Schönaich were merged to form the community of Schönaich-Wohlsdorf. The communities of Tanzelsdorf and Vochera an der Laßnitz originally formed the community of Tanzelsdorf and had become independent communities in 1893. The name of the municipality Kraubath was changed to Kraubath (West Styria) on March 1, 1949, in order to avoid confusion with Kraubath an der Mur . The names of the communities Grub, Grünau, Krottendorf and Petzelsdorf were changed to Grub bei Groß Sankt Florian , Grünau an der Laßnitz , Krottendorf an der Laßnitz and Petzelsdorf in West Styria on June 1, 1951 .

In 2012, as part of the municipal structural reform, requests were made to connect part of the area to the Stainztal municipality instead of the Stainz municipality in accordance with the parish of Groß St. Florian.

According to the 2001 census, the community had 2,973 inhabitants. 96.8% of the population have Austrian citizenship. 95.0% of the population profess to the Roman Catholic Church, 2.8% are without religious belief.

The interior of the parish church

Parish church

The parish church of Groß Sankt Florian is probably based on a Romanesque hall church with a wooden flat ceiling from the 11th century. In 2008, archaeological investigations uncovered the Gothic soil and possibly also the Romanesque soil level.

Around 1350 there was a large Gothic extension with the north tower. In 1522, the Gothic extension with a ribbed vault took place before the church was redesigned in Baroque style from 1711 and was given its present appearance between 1869 and 1873. After interior and exterior renovations in 1968 and 1980, the baroque organ (1747 - Caspar Mitterreither) was replaced in 1998 .

The church has a large high altar from 1734 and its furnishings date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Grave monuments in the church date from around 1477 (Rudolf von Hollenegg), 1529, 1558, 1593, 1624 (Racknitz family) and 1640 (Bishop of Lavant Diocese Leonhard II. Götz ).

The Marian column from around 1737 shows St. Nepomuk , Franz Xaver , Sebastian , Rochus , Antonius of Padua and John the Baptist . The statue of the Virgin Mary is traced back to the neo-Gothic renovation in 1911.

Styrian Fire Brigade Museum

The Styrian Fire Brigade Museum was opened in 1995. It shows the development and tasks of the Styrian fire services.

Roman collection

This collection shows archaeological finds and is housed in a room in the fire department museum. The collection was reorganized based on the excavation results in 2008 and reopened on May 15, 2009. An excavation site is located south of Groß St. Florian in the Laßnitz valley in the cadastral community of Grünau. In addition to the remains of a Bronze Age settlement, the remains of the "Villa von Grünau" were found there. It is a large estate from Roman times that was located on the territory of Flavia Solva . The excavations, during which several grave mounds belonging to the villa were examined, were carried out (with interruptions) between 1988 and 2008. The most valuable find from the villa is the Grünau silver beaker , a copy of which is on display in the collection (the original is in the Universalmuseum Joanneum in Graz). This mug is 7.5 cm high and weighs 400 grams. It is counted among the most valuable and important finds from Roman times in Styria.

The Groß Sankt Florian music band, the Groß Sankt Florian youth wind orchestra, the Fuchs family music and the Florian dance floor music come from Groß Sankt Florian . The center of musical training is the local music school, a branch of the Archduke Johann Music School in Stainz.

Economy and Infrastructure

According to the 2001 census of workplaces, there are 134 workplaces with 1,101 employees in the municipality as well as 879 out-commuters and 710 in-commuters. The most important industries are manufacturing and trading, the most important employers are producers of clothing and gaming machines, a company for crane and agricultural machinery, a large wine cellar, as well as a slaughterhouse and wood processing. There are 174 agricultural and forestry holdings (41 of which are the main occupation), which together manage 2,582 hectares (1999).

The community is located on the state road 601, which runs in the Laßnitz valley and connects the Murtal with the Pyhrn motorway A 9 and the Deutschlandsberg district. Stops on the Graz – Lieboch – Wies-Eibiswald line of the Graz – Köflacher Bahn (GKB) are in Groß St. Florian and Gussendorf. GKB bus lines connect the community with the surrounding area for school transport.

The community is located on the route of the Koralm Railway, which is under construction . For this railway line, the course of the Laßnitz was redesigned over more than two kilometers in 2008/09 and flood retention basins were created. As part of this work, the Laßnitz bridge between Gussendorf and Lassenberg near Wettmannstätten was rebuilt as a 142 m long and 14.5 m high reinforced concrete bridge and opened to traffic on August 29, 2008.

With FF Groß St. Florian, FF Gussendorf, FF Kraubath, FF Michlgleinz and FF Tanzelsdorf, the municipality has five volunteer fire brigades .

coat of arms

The right to use the municipal coat of arms was confirmed on November 1, 1994. Due to the amalgamation of the municipalities, the coat of arms lost its official validity on January 1st, 2015. The re-award took place on December 1, 2015.
