Brigitte Young (born May 26, 1946 in Groß Sankt Florian , Austria ) is a professor (em.) For International Political Economy at the Institute for Political Science of the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster . Since her retirement in 2011, she has continued to work as a researcher and expert for the European Commission and has also published numerous scientific and journalistic articles on the financial and euro crisis .

Life

Brigitte Young studied from 1978 to 1982 at the University of California, Santa Barbara and UC Davis and from 1984 to 1990 at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . After obtaining the Ph.D. in International / Comparative Political Economy, she became Professor at Wesleyan University , Connecticut (1991–1997). Between 1994 and 1995 Brigitte Young was also a Research Fellow in “German and European Studies” at the “School of Foreign Service” at Georgetown University in Washington DC. From 1997 to 1999, Brigitte Young taught at the Otto Suhr Institute at Freie Universität Berlin . There she completed her habilitation with Elmar Altvater on the subject of "Globalization and Gender Regimes". From 1999 to 2011 she was Professor of International / Comparative Political Economy at the Institute for Political Science at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . Since 2011 she has been visiting professor at Science-Politique , Paris (CERI - Center d'Etudes et de Recherches Internationales) and at Science-Politique , Lille; at the JF Kennedy Institute, Freie Universität Berlin , the Center for the Study of Globalization and Regionalization at the University of Warwick , and the Central European University in Budapest . Her work and research focus are globalization, world economy, international political economy, financial crises and financial market regulation, world trade and WTO , global governance, and feminist macroeconomics (trade, finance and social reproduction).

In 2016 she was awarded the Käthe Leichter State Prize .

Young is a member of the Society for Socio-Economic Education and Science (GSÖBW).

Work as an expert

In 2000, Brigitte Young was appointed as an expert in the study commission “Globalization of the World Economy - Challenges and Answers” ​​of the German Bundestag , in which she worked as an adviser for two years. Since 2008 she has also worked on several projects as an independent expert and appraiser for the European Commission .

Brigitte Young is a member and head of projects of the research network " GARNET - Network of Excellence (NoE) - Global Governance, Regionalization and Regulation: The Role of the EU", which has been funded by the European Union since 2005 , at which European universities for the first time joint research projects on the context of globalization, governance and the European Union . She was elected as a board member of the NoE's management committee for the duration of the project up to and including 2010. From 2010 to 2014 she was a delegate in the administrative committee and, together with Christoph Scherrer, project leader of Working Group 1 ( Systemic Risks, Crises, and the Search for Financial Stability in Modern Finance ) of an EU-funded research project on the causes, dynamics and consequences of the subprime crisis .

As part of the five-year GARNET project, Young is coordinating the establishment of a "virtual network" in coordination with the business informatics specialists at the European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS). The communication and information platform aims to network cross-university research projects and activities. Brigitte Young also heads the GARNET research project “Gender in International Political Economy” (GIPE).

In 2007, Brigitte Young was appointed to the Warwick Commission examining the future of the world trade system, chaired by Pierre Pettigrew , former Canadian Minister of Commerce and Foreign Affairs. The Commission presented its final report “The Multilateral Trade Regime: Which Way Forward?” On December 6, 2007 in Geneva.

Since 2008, she has also been an independent expert for the EU Commission , DG Science and Innovation, in the area of ​​macroeconomic funded projects of the EU-FP6, FP7 and Horizon 2020. She is also on the supervisory boards of the Global Labor University - Combating Inequality Research Project ( University of Kassel / University of Economics and Law Berlin ); Member of the expert group of the European Minister, Dr. Schwall-Düren, of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (2011–2014); Member of the Progress Forum - Growth - Prosperity - Quality of Life ( Friedrich Ebert Foundation ) 2011–2013; Member of the supervisory board of Gender Studies at the University of Cologne . Since 2011 she has been on the scientific advisory board of the EU-FP7 funded project FESSUD: Financialization, Economy, Society, and Sustainable Development , project leader: Malcolm Sawyer, Business School, University of Leeds (2011–2016). Brigitte Young is also a member of Attac's Scientific Advisory Board .

Editorships

Brigitte Young served on the Global Governance Editorial Boards . A review of Multilateralism and International Organizations (2005–2011), and the International Feminist Journal of Politics (2008–2012). Brigitte Young is currently co-editor of the book series Globale Politische Ökonomie (with Hans-Jürgen Bieling , Oliver Kessler and Andreas Nölke ), Feminist and Critical Political Economy (with Uta Ruppert ), as well as on the editorial board of the book series Global Political Economy of Gender and Sexuality , and the Journal of Economic Policy Reform .
