Käthe Leichter Prize
The Käthe Leichter Prize is the Austrian state prize for women's research , gender research and equality in the world of work.
history
The prize, founded in 1991, was initiated by the historian Herbert Steiner , who was supported by the Minister for Women, Johanna Dohnal . It is named after the social democratic politician Käthe Leichter (1895–1942), who was murdered during the National Socialist era . The award, originally founded as the "State Prize for the Women's History of the Workers' Movement ", is given to two women annually by the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs. A jury decides on the award of the prize.
In addition to the state prize, two other women were awarded "recognition prizes for the Käthe Leichter Prize" each year by the Austrian National Bank and the Chamber for Workers and Employees .
In the years 2001 to 2004 the Käthe Leichter Prize was not awarded. It was the years of the black and blue federal government Schüssel I (several women in the cabinet, but no women minister) and the first years of the federal government Schüssel II , which again included a women minister since 2003.
Since 2005, the State Prize has only been awarded to one recipient, all other award winners receive recognition prizes.
