Brigitte Halbmayr (* 1965 in Sankt Johann in Engstetten , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian sociologist and political scientist . She has been working at the Vienna Institute for Conflict Research (IKF) since the early 1990s .

Education and employment

Brigitte Halbmayr studied sociology and political science at the University of Vienna and graduated with a master's degree . At the same university she worked as a tutor at the Institute for Contemporary History in the winter semester 1999/2000 , as well as a lecturer in the academic year 2005/06 at the Institute for Political Science and in the winter semester 2006/07 at the Institute for Cultural and Social Anthropology . She has also taught at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt (2014), the Church University of Education Vienna / Krems (2012-2015), the Institute for Legal Basics at the Karl-Franzens University Graz (since winter semester 2019/20) and to the Center for Teacher Education at the University of Vienna (WS 2019/20). In addition, she completed a doctorate at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Vienna and received her doctorate in 2005 with a thesis on the dominance culture approach in comparison to Critical Whiteness Studies (CWS) in the USA and in German-speaking countries.

Since 1992 she has been a research assistant at the Institute for Conflict Research in Vienna, where she often works with the social scientist Helga Amesberger and sometimes publishes with her.

Halbmayr's main research interests are racism , right-wing extremism , integration , gender studies , National Socialism and the Holocaust , as well as oral history and biography research .

With a focus on National Socialism and the Holocaust, Halbmayr did research in particular on the Ravensbrück and Mauthausen concentration camps . As part of the so-called Mauthausen Survivors Documentation Project (MSDP), a joint cooperation project of the LBI Historical Social Science, the Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW) and the IKF, scientists from 20 (language) regions in Europe , Israel and the USA in the years 2002/03 more than 800 survivors of the Mauthausen concentration camp were interviewed about their lives - in their respective colloquial language. Halbmayr pursued the women in the “men's camp” in Mauthausen in a follow-up project. The publication Mauthausen in the classroom, which she published in 2014 together with Heribert Bastel, deals with the inclusion of memorials in the school's examination of the National Socialist past.

Halbmayr has been working with the Austrians in the women's concentration camp in Ravensbrück since the mid-1990s. The two-volume publication “ Vom Leben und Überleben - Weg nach Ravensbrück ”, written together with Helga Amesberger in 2001, was aimed at them. The women's concentration camp in memory. ” The study “ Sexualized Violence - Female Experiences in Nazi Concentration Camps ” , which Halbmayr carried out with her colleagues Helga Amesberger and Katrin Auer, is regarded as a standard work on this little-discussed topic. The research project carried out by Halbmayr together with Amesberger and Kerstin Lercher on the “registration of names of formerly imprisoned Austrians in the Ravensbrück concentration camp ” came to an end in 2009. In 2015, the interactive website ravensbrueckerinnen.at went online, on which you can find a lot of information about the Ravensbrück concentration camp and the Austrians in the Ravensbrück concentration camp as well as materials such as videos, photos and teaching and learning materials.

In addition to various scientific studies and specialist books, Halbmayr published numerous articles in specialist journals and compilations . She also dealt with the role of Austrian men and women in the resistance against National Socialism , as in her technical essay "It was a matter of course that we helped." The parachute agents Albert Huttary and Josef Zettler and their supporters - a case study , which was published in the 2009 yearbook of the Documentation Archive of Austrian Resistance (DÖW). Among other things, she dealt with the fate of the resistance fighter Hilde Zimmermann , b. Wundsam , and Othmar Wundsam , and comes to the conclusion:

“[…] Without a doubt also applies to the helpers of the parachute agents. Their activity can be described as resistant without reservation and - as the large participation of Austrian men and women in the National Socialist machinery of persecution and extermination shows - it was not a matter of course, even if the women interviewed portray it that way. "

In addition, Halbmayr published several political biographies, such as in 2012 about the Auschwitz survivor, chronist and enlightener Hermann Langbein (1912–1995) and in 2015 about the founder and long-time director of the documentation archive of the Austrian resistance Herbert Steiner (1923–2001). In 2019 she published together with Helga Amesberger and Simon Clemens “My mom was a resistance fighter”. Networks of resistance and its importance for the next generation.

Also in 2019 was “Work shy and morally degenerate”. Persecution of women as "anti-social" under National Socialism.
