St. Peter in der Au (also Sankt Peter in der Au ) is a market town with 5193 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the district of Amstetten in Lower Austria .

Geographically speaking, St. Peter in der Au is located in the western part of the Mostviertel in the political district of Amstetten .

The area of ​​the large community of St. Peter in der Au has since the major community reform on January 1st, 1971, an area of ​​59.83 km² with 5,193 inhabitants and 1,071 houses, about 21 percent of the area is forested.

history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province . St. Peter was founded by Egino von Owe in the 12th century. The community was formerly the seat of an extensive territory and has been a market for around 750 years . It is one of the heart of the Mostviertel communities.

In 1918, through the initiative of the mayor of Steyr, there was a plan for the construction of a standard gauge railway St. Peter – Steyr – Bad Hall , but the kk railway ministry rejected the application for a pre-concession.

On the night of October 24-25, 1947, eleven people from two families were murdered in a farmhouse in St. Peter; the perpetrators were never caught. According to the community chronicle, the act is Austria's largest unsolved murder case .

Sports

The UFC St. Peter / Au was founded in 1946 . The club plays its home games on the sports field in St. Peter in der Au, which was completely renovated in 2018. There has always been a rivalry to the USC Seitenstetten club from the neighboring community to the east, with around a thousand spectators making the pilgrimage to the local sports fields, even for lower-class games. The football club took 15th place in the 2018/19 season and was relegated to the 2nd State League West .
