The Elisabethwarte is an 18.5 m high observation tower on the Plattenberg (750 m) in the Grub district of the Lower Austrian municipality of Weistrach , not far from Kürnberg . The control room is listed by name in ÖK 50 and is briefly described in Dehio Niederösterreich Süd der Donau 2003 .

history

As early as the 19th century there was a simple wooden control room on the Plattenberg. Today's Elisabethwarte was opened on September 23, 1900. It was named after Empress Elisabeth , who was murdered in 1898. The control room was built by the Austrian Tourist Club , Section St. Peter / Seitenstetten, and handed over to the Austrian Alpine Club , Section St. Peter in der Au in 1976 . A total of 82 steps lead to the viewing platform, from which one has a unique view over the Alpine foothills: the view stretches from the Dead Mountains in the south to the Danube Valley , and in good weather you can see Linz.

The control room is a 5-storey crenellated tower. Above the portal is a bust of Empress Elisabeth made by the academic sculptor Paul Kohl .

As part of a Leader project with the project name Rock the Sissi , the control room was not only renovated in spring 2017, but also expanded into a tower that can be climbed on three sides. Furthermore, in the course of the project, a tourist concept was developed with the aim of making the rural region around the Elisabethwarte more accessible for tourism.
