Maria Schaumayer

Maria Schaumayer (born October 7, 1931 in Graz ; † January 23, 2013 in Vienna ) was an Austrian economist and politician ( ÖVP ). From 1990 to 1995 she was President of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank . In this role she was the first woman in the world.

Life

In 1949, Schaumayer graduated with distinction at the Realgymnasium in Fürstenfeld and then studied world trade and economics and law at the Innsbruck Faculty of Law until 1952 at the University of World Trade in Vienna , graduating with the title Dkfm. and May 1954 Dr. rer oec. from. Her dissertation was entitled: Modern market research and marketing in export.

At first, Schaumayer worked in the banking division of Creditanstalt-Bankverein , where she became authorized representative in 1961.

In the city ​​of Vienna , Maria Schaumayer was a member of the city ​​senate and the state government from 1965 to 1973 as the leading city councilor nominated by the ÖVP : she was responsible for municipal enterprises ( city ​​councilor , city senate Marek I , 1965 to 1969) and for building authority and other technical matters ( city senate Marek II , Slavik and Gratz I , 1969 to 1973). From 1969 to 1982 she was a member of the Vienna State Parliament and City Council. In 1974 she became a board member of Kommunalkredit AG in Vienna.

From 1982 to 1989 she was CFO of the ÖMV , from 1990 to 1995 President of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank . On the occasion of her 60th birthday in 1991, she founded the Foundation for Women in Business, which awards prizes. From 2000 she was the government commissioner for the compensation of forced laborers under the Nazi regime . In this role, she played a key role in the conclusion of bilateral agreements between the Republic of Austria and six European countries as well as the USA and was able to reach an agreement with a group of civil plaintiffs represented by lawyer Ed Fagan . Around 132,000 former forced laborers have received compensation through the establishment of the Austrian Fund for Reconciliation, Peace and Cooperation .

Maria Schaumayer, who died on January 23, 2013, was buried on February 2, 2013 in the Döblinger Friedhof in an honorary grave (group 34, row 5, number 16). In 2014, the Schaumayerplatz in Vienna- Döbling (19th district) was named after her and renamed Maria-Schaumayer-Platz in 2016 .

On October 4, 2011, a ceremony took place at the National Bank in Vienna to mark her 80th birthday.

The OeNB created the Dr. Maria Schaumayer Habilitation Scholarship for young women scientists , which is advertised at their alma mater, today's Vienna University of Economics and Business .

Foundation, endowment
