Robert Holzmann (born February 27, 1949 in Leoben , Austria ) is an Austrian economist and has been the governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank since September 1, 2019 .

From 1997 to 2011 he held various positions at the World Bank in Washington, DC, USA , from 1997 to 2009 as Sector Director, from 2009 to 2011 as Research Director and in 2002/03 as Acting Senior Vice-President.

Academic career

Robert Holzmann studied economics after graduating from high school and graduated in 1972 with a master's degree from the University of Graz , Austria . In 1972/73 he worked as a doctoral student at the University of Grenoble , France , then again at the University of Graz until 1975, before receiving his doctorate in 1977 at the University of Vienna , Austria, and in 1983 with a thesis on the subject of lifetime income and distribution analysis: Intra- and interpersonal aspects habilitated . Before his appointment as associate professor for economics at the University of Vienna in 1990 he was a. a. worked as assistant for economics to the later Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen . He has been a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2014 .

Professional activities

From 1985 Robert Holzmann worked for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, France , and from 1988 for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, DC, USA , as Senior Economist. In 1992 he moved to the Saarland University in Saarbrücken , Germany , as a full professor for international economic relations and European economics , where he was also director of the Europa-Institut . 1997 President named him James Wolfensohn to the Sector Director and Head Sector Board for the area Social Protection and Labor (Social Security and Labor) of the World Bank in Washington, DC, USA. From 2002-2003 he was acting Senior Vice-President of the World Bank and from 2009 as Research Director. He was also head of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute (LBI) for analysis of economic policy activities in Vienna, Austria for many years .

In 2003 he became a Research Fellow at the Research Institute for the Future of Work (IZA) in Bonn, Germany , and is also a Research Fellow at the CES Ifo in Munich, Germany . He was visiting professor at Hitotsubashi University , Tokyo, Japan , (1991), the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile , Santiago de Chile (1995), the University of Economics and Finance of Southwest China , Chengdu, China (honorary professorship 2010) and the University of New South Wales , Sydney, Australia (Honorary Professorship 2013). From 2012 to 2015 he taught at Malaya University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia , where he became a Distinguished Research Fellow in 2016 .

He has been Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank since September 2019 . As a result, he is a member of the Council of the European Central Bank (Member of the Governing Council of the ECB), Austria's Governor at the International Monetary Fund (IMF Board of Governors) and member of the Board of the European Systemic Risk Board (European System Risk Board). Furthermore, he takes the governors at the meeting of the Bank for International Settlements in part (Bank for International Settlements).

Publications

39 books, 94 book chapters, 48 ​​articles in refereed journals, 29 articles in non-refereed economic policy journals, 22 other publications as well as numerous discussion papers, research papers and strategy papers in German, English, French and Spanish.
