European Research Center for Information Systems

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ERCIS - European Research Center for Information Systems - is an international network of scientists who jointly research in the field of application system and organizational design.

history

The research center was founded in 2004 at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . It is the first research center of its kind and is considered a world leader. The managing director is Jörg Becker , the board of directors includes nine other professors from Münster: Klaus Backhaus , Martin Dugas, Bernd Hellingrath, Thomas Hoeren , Stefan Klein, Herbert Kuchen, Heike Trautmann and Gottfried Vossen . After retiring from the board of directors, Heinz Lothar Grob , Ulrich Müller-Funk and Ulrich Thonemann left the board of directors because he left the Westphalian Wilhelms University . The operational management was with Axel Winkelmann from 2004 to 2009, since 2009 with Armin Stein.

character

The ERCIS has mainly European, but also non-European partners. It is supported by an advisory board made up of companies from practice. This enables practical research and training for students and doctoral candidates.

Research focuses on the areas of application system and organizational design. In an institutional framework, core competencies of business informatics are linked with issues of computer science , business administration , sociology and law ( state competence center for information, telecommunications and media law ). This creates a holistic view of the operational application system and organization design and guides many questions, be it the design of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in and between companies ( interorganizational system ), the process-oriented workflow organization using modern IT systems or the implementation future-oriented application architectures.

A related research area is the integration of different technical systems in an overall architecture, such as the integration of data warehouse solutions, content management systems , workflow management systems or document management systems into the corporate IT landscape. Further research fields are e-government , process management in public administrations , information management , e-commerce , as well as communication and collaboration systems (for example groupware and CSCW ).

Based on the technical conceptual aspect, special requirements in trade, administration or industry, in the entire supply chain or in operational functions such as controlling or marketing are modeled, improved, legally secured and implemented using IT technology. ERCIS conducts research along the entire path from the requirement through implementation to the use of IT systems. Research into the use of systems at the level of individuals, groups, organizations and markets provides a fundamental understanding of how socio-technical systems work, which is used as an important input in the design of systems. Via the ERCIS Launch Pad, the research center also offers students and young start-ups the opportunity to present their own business ideas to potential investors and to receive further support for the start-up in an accompanied start-up competition.
