Jürgen Untermann

Jürgen Untermann (born October 24, 1928 in Rheinfelden (Baden) ; † February 7, 2013 in Brauweiler ) was a German Indo-European linguist and epigraphist .

life and work

Untermann studied with Hans Krahe and Ulrich Schmoll in Frankfurt am Main and in Tübingen , where he received his doctorate in 1954. He completed his habilitation in 1959. In 1962, he conducted research on the Monumenta Linguarum Hispanicarum at Spanish universities , including with Antonio Tovar . From 1965 until his retirement in 1993 he taught as a professor for Indo-European linguistics ( historical linguistics ) at the University of Cologne . His main field of research was the fragmentary Italian and old Spanish " rubble languages ". In particular in the field of the Iberian language , Untermann was considered the highest scientific authority. His edition of paleohispanic inscriptions ( Monumenta Linguarum Hispanicarum , founded by Emil Huebner ) and the systematization of Iberian onomastics that he created are of particular importance .

Untermann was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute . He received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Salamanca (1992), Coimbra and Santiago de Compostela . In 2010 he received the Príncipe de Viana International Prize of the Province of Navarra for Culture .

His son is the art historian Matthias Untermann .
