Sankt Oswald ob Eibiswald is a place in western Styria . Until the end of 2014 it was a municipality with 562 inhabitants (as of 2014) in the Deutschlandsberg district in Styria . As part of the Styrian municipal structural reform , St. Oswald ob Eibiswald was merged with the municipalities of Aibl , Eibiswald , Großradl , Pitschgau and Soboth to form the municipality of Eibiswald in 2015 . The basis for this is the Styrian Municipal Structural Reform Act - StGsrG. A complaint brought by the municipality against the amalgamation to the Constitutional Court was unsuccessful.

Sankt Oswald ob Eibiswald is located in southern western Styria and consists of four cadastral communities. The area is drained by the Krumbach (to the Feistritz and the Drau) and the Haderniggbach (to the Saggaubach and the Mur).

Community structure

With 1,386 hectares, KG Krumbach forms the largest unit in the northeast. In the northeast, the KG St. Oswald ob Eibiswald joins with 526 ha, in the southeast is the KG Mitterstrasse with 330 ha. The smallest KG is located in the south with Rothwein . It is only 85 hectares in size.

Sankt Oswald was first mentioned in a document on November 6, 1399. In the document handed down, which today is only preserved in a copy from the 16th century, Count Hermann von Cilli also awarded Peter Methnitzer two hubs and a forest near St. Oswald ob Eibiswald (“ Item zwo hueben vnnd ainen waldt bey Sandt Oswaldt located in the Saka ”).

During the National Socialist July coup in 1934, the gendarmerie post was occupied by National Socialists under the leadership of the mayor's son, the weapons stolen and the two gendarmes present at the post placed under guard. After this coup, some of the Nazi rebels drove to Eibiswald, while the rest obtained more weapons from the farmers in the area. After the collapse of the coup, seven people were arrested in the town for participating in the July coup, the rest, including the mayor's son, fled to Germany via Yugoslavia.

The former name of the community, "Sankt Oswald", was changed to St. Oswald ob Eibiswald on June 1, 1951 . The name change for the village "Buchenberg", also in St. Oswald ob Eibiswald , came into force on January 1st, 1973.

According to the 2001 census, the municipality had 641 inhabitants. 95.9% of the population have Austrian citizenship. 91.6% of the population profess to the Roman Catholic Church, 4.2% are without religious belief.


Population development

In contrast to the trend developed within the Deutschlandsberg district, the population trend in Sankt Oswald was recently strongly negative.
