Wilhelm Brandenstein
Wilhelm Brandenstein (born October 23, 1898 in Salzburg , † December 1, 1967 in Graz ) was an Austrian linguist , historian and alpinist .
From 1941 to 1967 he was head of the Institute for Comparative Linguistics at the University of Graz .
He wrote works on the ancient Persian and ancient Greek languages as well as on historical questions such as the origin of the Etruscans or the question of Plato's Atlantis . On the basis of a literary-critical investigation, he took the position that Atlantis was not an invention of Plato, but a historical tradition . In his opinion this went back to the Minoan culture . With his thoughts he inspired Massimo Pallottino to write his article Atlantide .
As an alpinist, he made a special contribution to the development of the Granatspitz group .
