history

Engraving from 1681

It was first mentioned in a document in 1074, and it is assumed that it was built in 1009. It was the ancestral home of the lords of Püchlern or Pühelarn ('Pichl / Bühel' means hill , the name corresponds to 'Pichler') of whom a Walter is mentioned in 1139.

According to a confirmation letter from Admont Abbey on October 10, 1139, “ she owned the whole tithe from the Reginhards estate of Püchlarn. ". In the middle of the 12th century Leo the Noble von Püchlarn bequeathed the estate to the Admont Abbey, which in return assured him that he would be provided for for life. In 1191 Volkmar von Püchel lived in the castle. According to an Admonter document, a Leo von Puhele is mentioned in 1344 , who died in 1360. With him, the Puhele family seems to have died out. Later, in a document from 1385, it is stated that Hans Kirchdorfer bought the Pichlarn court from Johann Dumersdorfer, representatives of a Styrian knight family.

Subsequently, the castle was administered for several centuries by the clergy from Austria, Italy and Bavaria. It also served as a recreational residence, so Pope Pius II , Enea Silvio de 'Piccolomini is said to have been a guest here.

In 1551 the castle is mentioned under the name of Edelmannsitz Püchlern ob Irdning , after which the owner changed several times.

The Lords of Stainach took possession of the castle in 1555 and built the two typical round towers. As a result, the owners changed again and again. In 1896, after the death of Othmar Graf Lamberg, the property passed to his wife, Countess Johanna Lamberg, née. Freiin Mecsery about. This became known in the area because it cared for the poor, the sick and also for the school children.

Residence of Fritz Ries

Fritz Ries set up a carpet factory for Pegulan-Werke in the Styrian city of Hartberg in the early 1970s . In view of the economically weak region, Styrian politicians were very interested in Ries' investment. It is said that they were sweetened for him with concessions on the purchase of Pichlarn Castle. He converted the castle into a luxury hotel with a new golf course. It then functioned as a meeting place for numerous German politicians for strategic meetings, which the German news magazine Der Spiegel reported on several times (allegations of corruption against defectors, planning at Pichlarn Castle). Among the better-known visitors under the Ries era were Franz Josef Strauss , CSU regional group leader Richard Stücklen , the then candidate for chancellor Helmut Kohl and Hanns Martin Schleyer .

Hotel operations

After the death of Fritz Ries, the hotel was sold in 1979 and rebuilt and expanded again and again.

Today the castle is used as a hotel and golf resort and has undergone a series of major renovations including the expansion of the golf course. The hotel has 96 rooms and suites and is classified as a five-star hotel . Since autumn 2008, it is one of the Schloss Fuschl -powered . Since the beginning of 2016, after a renovation phase in 2015/16, Schloss Pichlarn has been one of the Romantik Hotels and has therefore changed its name to Romantik Hotel Schloss Pichlarn .
