The airbase Fiala Fernbrugg (also airbase Aigen ) is an air base of the air forces the Austrian army in Aigen in Ennstal in State Steiermark .

From an organizational point of view, Aigen Air Base is a specialist department of Fliegerwerft 3 based in Hörsching, which in turn is part of the air support squadron within the air force.

history

Opened in 1937, Bomber Squadron 1 (BoGeschw 1) was relocated from Wiener Neustadt / West airfield to Aigen.

The air base was assigned to the Austrian Armed Forces in 1955. The name of the air base was renamed to Fiala Fernbrugg Air Base in 1967. Benno Fiala of Fernbrugg was a fighter pilot Austria-Hungary in World War I .

In January 1968 the air base was the location of the final scenes of the agent thriller Agents Die Lonely .

The air base was open from May 5th to 11th. August 2002 venue for the 11th Helicopter World Championship . The armed forces have announced plans to close the base.

use

In October 2008, 24 Alouette IIIs were stationed in Aigen im Ennstal and were delivered to the army from January 1967. 8 of them were relocated to the Brumowski Air Base in Langenlebarn as training helicopters after (there?) The type Bell 206 was retired.

As of September 2017, the armed forces are operating 22 Alouette IIIs , which (as of December 2018) are also stationed at bases in Klagenfurt (LOXK) and Schwaz in Tyrol (LOXI).
