The Pegulan-Werke was founded in 1946 by Fritz Ries in Frankenthal in the Palatinate.

After the war, the company was the largest German manufacturer of linoleum flooring, alongside Deutsche Linoleum-Werke AG. Later carpets, plastic floors (PVC), special coverings, profiles, foils, fabrics and plastic insulation were added. In 1961 the company was converted into an AG. Major shareholder Ries became chairman of the board.

In the 1972/73 financial year, Pegulan-Werke AG had over 2,000 employees, numerous subsidiaries and a turnover of approx. 400 million DM , including the Dr. Ries Group, which includes the Badische Plastic-Werke in Bötzingen and ROPLASTA-International Dyna-Plastik-Werk in Bergisch Gladbach belonged to more than 500 million DM. The chairman of the supervisory board was Ernst Rieche , member of the board of directors of Commerzbank AG , deputy chairman of the supervisory board Hanns Martin Schleyer , member of the board of management of what was then Daimler-Benz AG , Stuttgart.

In the mid-1970s, Pegulan-Werke AG ran into financial difficulties. In 1975 a standstill agreement (moratorium for one year) was agreed with the creditor banks. Also in 1975 the company received a guarantee from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate for 15 million marks. One year after Fritz Ries' suicide, Dieter H. Vogel took over the position of CEO and restructured the group. Within two years he turned a 40 million DM loss into an equally high profit.

In 1987, Swedish Match AB acquired the majority. Both companies merged to form Tarkett Pegulan AG. After further acquisitions and sales, it is now part of the French Tarkett group .
