Zauchensee is a district of the Austrian market town of Altenmarkt im Pongau , located in the state of Salzburg . Zauchensee is known for its winter sports area and as the venue for the Ski World Cup .

Zauchensee ski area

Zauchensee is the southernmost part of the Altenmarkt municipality. It is the core of the ski area with hotels and ski lifts. The district is between 1350 and 2188 meters above sea level.

history

The ski area was created in the 1960s. In 1964 the lift company was established in Zauchensee and the first drag lift went into operation in the winter of 1964/65. Further expansions of the ski facilities and the transport connection between Altenmarkt and Zauchensee followed. In 1989 it merged with the Radstadt-Altenmarkt lift company. In 2006 the Seekarsee was created as a storage lake for making snow on the ski slopes.

Sports

The Zauchensee-Flachauwinkl-Kleinarl ski area has 25 lifts and over 70 kilometers of slopes for leisure and professional sports.

  • Ski World Cup: several world cup races, the first in 1980 with downhill and slalom Super-G , more in 1980, 1988, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2004, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017. 2002 was the men's and women's World Cup final In 2007 the women's World Cup final was held in Zauchensee. From 2020 the Ski World Cup will come to Zauchensee every two years, alternating with Sankt Anton am Arlberg .

In the 1980s, races were held on the Gamskogel-Ost descent, since 1990 the route from the Gamskogel has led through the Kälberloch. The first men's race started from the summit of the Gamskogel in 2002, and since 2007 the women have also started from the top. The calf hole route is one of the most demanding routes in the women's world cup. Prominent winners of the route include Vreni Schneider , Petra Kronberger , Renate Götschl , Michaela Dorfmeister , Julia Mancuso , Lindsey Vonn and Anja Pärson .

With the Kids Trophy, the area is also the venue for the largest children's ski race in Europe.

Recreational sports

For recreational sports, the ski area offers slopes for beginners and children, but also for advanced skiers and freestyle. The area is also suitable for hikers in summer. The Gamskogelbahn I is also open in summer and takes guests to the Gamskogelhütte and the “Animal World Cup” adventure playground. In the Zauchensee itself, you can go swimming in summer.

Personalities

Zauchensee is the home of the Austrian ski world champion Michael Walchhofer , who today runs three hotels in Zauchensee: the Zauchenseehof, the Hotel Zentral and the Hotel Sportwelt, which opened in 2014.
