The Straßegg (formerly also Zuckenhut ) is 1163  m above sea level. A. (according to the sign at the top of the pass 1170  m above sea level ) high mountain pass in Styria in the Fischbacher Alps . It connects the Murtal near Pernegg via Breitenau am Hochlantsch with the Feistritztal near Birkfeld via Gasen . At the top of the pass is the Gasthaus Strasseggwirt, an inn that was originally operated as an alpine inn since 1851.

Two Austrian long-distance hiking trails, the Mariazeller Weg and the Central Alpine Trail and the international pilgrimage route Via Slavorum from Krakow via Mariazell to Assisi lead in a north-south direction over the pass. Both at the inn and on the opposite side, numerous crosses and plaques remind of many foot pilgrimages.

Mining

At the Straßegg mining for gold was already practiced from 1050 . In the following centuries silver, galena and arsenic followed. For this purpose, a drivable path was created over the Straßegg into the gases.

To the north and northeast of the top of the pass are the remains ( pingen and heaps ) of this abandoned arsenic and gold mining in an area around 1.2 km long and a few hundred meters wide . The ore flow of the deposit consists of arsenopyrite , galena , pyrite and fahler ore , embedded in cleavage-parallel quartz / carbonate veins in phyllitic metavolcanites. The quantities of gold , silver , lead and, above all, arsenic extracted here made mining on the Zuckenhut one of the most important mines in the Eastern Alps from the late 15th century to the middle of the 16th century . The Arsenikproduktion can be due to lack of resources previously only archaeologically until the second half of the 19th century prove.

In 2007 the Federal Monuments Office carried out archaeological investigations on a plant for the production of arsenicals. The system was cut under the former pits when the forest roads were being built. Parts of a sublimation furnace for the pyrotechnical extraction of artificial arsenic sulphides and the remains of a wooden basin for the wet chemical precipitation or cleaning of artificial arsenic sulphides were excavated.

The artist K.-J. Trinkl has created a work of art on the top of the pass and its surroundings to commemorate arsenic mining.

Motorsport

In August 2003, the 1st International Hill Climb Breitenau-Straßegg took place on the west side. The Gasen-Strassegg mountain rally took place on the east side for the first time in 2017 .
